Toy Story 5 Buzz Lightyear Army First Look Revealed

Details about Toy Story 5 have been released, including a first look at a large group of Buzz Lightyear action figures and a hint that they’ll be causing some chaos in the new movie. The story centers around Bonnie’s fascination with Lilypad, a frog-shaped tablet that serves as the main villain. These Buzz Lightyear figures will act as supporting villains in the film.

Empire magazine has shared a new photo from the upcoming Toy Story 5, showing a whole army of Buzz Lightyear toys. Dubbed “the Multi-Buzz,” these Buzz Lightyears are causing trouble because they’ve discovered they aren’t the real Buzz Lightyear – just toys. The image depicts them marching purposefully through a grassy, moss-covered landscape.

Director Andrew Stanton also shared some thoughts on the bigger picture of Toy Story 5, specifically why they chose Lilypad as the main villain. He explained that because of new technology, toys aren’t as important to kids as they used to be, and the movie will explore this idea. Here’s what Stanton had to say:

It’s less about a physical fight and more about a bigger issue: kids just aren’t playing with traditional toys like they used to. Technology has transformed how we all live, and we’re starting to wonder what that means for ourselves and for the next generation. Simply blaming technology isn’t the answer, though.

As a huge Toy Story fan, I loved the idea of multiple Buzz Lightyears introduced in Toy Story 2! Remember when Utility Belt Buzz broke free from all those other Buzzes in the toy store? He quickly became a really important character. It was so interesting to see him team up with Zurg, especially when they revealed Zurg was actually his dad, and then leave with him! It added so much depth to the story.

Tim Allen will once again voice Buzz Lightyear, similar to his work on Toy Story 4. This time, he’ll be playing multiple versions of Buzz—described as broken or malfunctioning toys. While it’s not yet clear how this fits into the overall plot, it likely connects to the film’s themes about the differences between modern technology and traditional toys.

Given that the Buzz Lightyear army seems like a more advanced version of the original toy, there might be a link between them and Lilypad. The Star Command symbol on their chests appears to be a screen, suggesting a system malfunction that causes them to act unpredictably. However, it’s still unclear how this fits into the overall story.

Despite the changing times, Toy Story 5 is expected to explore how kids are increasingly drawn to technology instead of traditional toys. The potential inclusion of Multi-Buzz could be a clever way to examine this shift, perhaps even showing how the line between toys and technology is becoming less clear.
