Initially, it was rumored that the remake of “The Toxic Avenger,” which premiered at Fantastic Fest in 2023, was deemed unfit for release due to its excessive violence. However, after almost two years, the movie is now preparing for its launch, set to hit theaters on August 22, 2025.

In my critical opinion, the revitalized cinematic marvel, sharing the same legendary title as its predecessor, unfolds the tale of Winston Gooze – a man played by the extraordinarily gifted Peter Dinklage (stealing scenes in Dexter: Resurrection). A janitor grappling with misfortune, Winston’s life takes an unexpected turn following a devastating toxic accident that transforms him into Toxie – an unlikely yet inspiring champion for the masses.

TopMob had a conversation with Macon Blair, known as The Toxic Avenger, who shared insights regarding initial rumors suggesting that the movie’s intense graphic content might have contributed to its delayed release.

Addressing those report, Blaire noted that “those headlines are inaccurate.”

Blair acknowledged that at a certain moment, he felt inclined to intervene and clarify some points in the interview, but he emphasized his disdain for engaging in online debates due to the fact that usually, no one emerges victorious. The director added that regarding the movie’s depiction of violence, it can be considered as a comedy that coincidentally includes a few scenes with some graphic content for amusement. Their intention was to create an atmosphere reminiscent of a live-action cartoon, offering serious emotional depth, but with physically absurd situations.

In our conversation, we talked with Lloyd Kaufman, the producer of the Toxic Avenger, a veteran filmmaker who created the original films. He shared valuable insights about the gore in the new movie, how it differs from the original, and a host of other interesting details. TopMob: “Over the last few years, there have been supposed rumors that this movie was supposedly unreleasable because of how violent it is. Did the amount of violence that you have in the movie ever give any issues at any point in the process in any way?”

As a supporter, I’d like to clarify that while I kept informed about the distribution process, my involvement was minimal. I find it hard to believe such headlines suggesting my disapproval or overexaggerating the film’s violence are accurate. I would be taken aback if anyone claimed the film is too violent for release. The R-rating makes it clear that while there may be intense content, it’s suitable and comfortable within those guidelines. However, it’s important to remember that there are elements in the movie that some viewers might find challenging.
To begin with, the entire ‘Terrifier’ series stands apart from many others due to its excessive violence or gore level. However, this was not our intention. Instead, these films are more comedic in nature, featuring occasional bursts of gore used humorously. I would avoid engaging in online correction debates as no one truly benefits from such exchanges.
Perhaps the game became misconstrued as it didn’t get released due to a game of “telephone” or miscommunication, and in this process, it got labeled as too graphic or gory. However, I don’t believe that was the actual reason for its non-release.

TopMob: “One of the biggest elements of the film is its insane gore. Can you talk a little bit about how utilizing that element of the story really enhances the experience that you were trying to deliver to audiences?”

Macon Blair explained that there were numerous references in their work, and they were using descriptive language to convey their intentions. One major reference was a live-action cartoon. This reminded him of animated series like Itchy and Scratchy, Tom and Jerry, or similar shows where violent jokes served as humor. However, it’s important to note that this was not intended to make the project seem trivial or unserious.
In simpler terms, the situation has strong emotional implications, yet the physical aspects are quite absurd or comical. We often referenced many humorous 1980s comedies produced by the Zucker-Abrams team such as ‘The Naked Gun’ and ‘Top Secret’, where the humor is largely based on physical antics intended to evoke laughter.

Lloyd Kaufman says that Blair has moved away from creating cartoons to make a film that has the power to move, entertain, and educate viewers, especially those who may not be aware of or think deeply about certain issues. The movie, titled ‘Toxic,’ tackles themes that resonate with individuals dealing with bullying, family problems, and those who feel different or marginalized.
In simpler terms, the freedom of speech and self-expression is being limited by Trump and his group. They’re attempting to dictate culture. To grab people’s attention, sometimes a touch of the shocking or gruesome… I believe ‘Toxic Avenger’ could serve as a wake-up call for some. And occasionally, a hint of madness, violence, and the cartoonish, comical nature can be effective.

How the Toxic Avenger Wanted This Reboot to Function Compared to the Original

This Film Has “Its Own Sort of Story In Terms of Plot Elements and Biographical Details.”

TopMob: “How did you want this film to function compared to the original?”

Macon Blair aimed for this project to have its unique narrative structure, combining plot elements and personal details. Essentially, it’s comparable to the world of comic books, where you might have characters like Robin (Dick Grayson or Jason Todd), but in this case, it’s a fresh take on the Toxic Avenger character. Although there are similarities, such as the tutu, the mop, and the eye patch, the new character has different circumstances, backstory, and overall identity.
Instead, my aim was to ensure consistency in tone, humor, and overall atmosphere, mirroring that of the original. I believe this is crucial, as when fans recommend the original, they often refer to these intangible qualities rather than plot details or character specifics.
I don’t believe it’s an exaggeration to say this was incredibly wild. He was engaged in combat with a mop, which is absurdly funny. That tone and energy are what really get people pumped up. Therefore, I wanted to make sure we maintained that essence as much as feasible.
I can’t stress enough how bizarre this was – he was battling against people using a mop, which was hilarious. The atmosphere and energy surrounding it is what everyone seems to love. So, I wanted to ensure we kept that spirit intact as much as possible.

Lloyd Kaufman: Macon Blair thoroughly embraced the project and did an exceptional job… Michael Herz and the entire Troma crew have watched it not once, but three times. I can’t pinpoint where they found it, but they just can’t seem to stop watching. They’ve watched it multiple times, and they adore it. Therefore, I believe it’s going to be fantastic. It’s for everyone. Yes, it’s unrated, but…

Macon offers all the elements of The Toxic Avenger, plus additional depth, and it tackles complex social drug issues, family struggles, a character who is merely a janitor, among other themes. Watching this film will undoubtedly evoke emotions within you.

Designing a New Toxie for a Modern Age

“It Was a Lot of Trial and Error.”

TopMob: “I want to talk to you a little bit about the process of finalizing the design for that for the titular Toxic Avenger, and then, you know, not only figuring it out on paper, but then going about and realizing it practically?”

Macon Blair: Our approach involved a fair amount of experimentation. We certainly took inspiration from the original makeup of the first film, but we also considered the more gentle styles seen in shows like ‘Toxic Crusaders’. Initially, the designs we created with some artists were quite decayed, messy, and almost alien-like. However, something was off, and it didn’t feel quite right.
After that, we decided to explore a different path, making him appear slightly more like an undead being, resembling a pale, almost black-and-white zombie. Eventually, our focus narrowed down to understanding that whoever would play Winston, whether it was Peter Dinklage or not at the time, their physical characteristics should be discernible beneath the makeup as he transforms. Additionally, we wanted his voice and facial appearance to remain consistent throughout the transformation, allowing viewers to maintain an emotional bond with the character they’ve spent 30 minutes getting to know at the start of the movie.
In the end, that was the approach we chose. Once we selected Peter for the role, with his unique facial characteristics such as defined cheeks, we managed to adapt those features into the design of Toxie, making it seem more fitting to me.

Lloyd Kaufman: Everything you see here is the work of Macon Blair. I sent him some suggestions a few times, but Macon wisely chose to disregard all my advice. Therefore, the production was entirely theirs. Louisa played a significant role inside ‘The Toxic Avenger,’ allowing Peter to stay out of it more. She did an excellent job… Essentially, it was all Macon Blair. He was in complete command. I didn’t notice anyone else making those types of decisions.

Sequel Desires for This New Toxic Avenger Reboot

“We’ve Had Discussions About What That Could Possibly Entail…”

TopMob: “The original movie went on and had several sequels. So, what is the intention here? Have you already thought about what a sequel could look like?”

Macon Blair contemplated the situation. There are a few minor details that hold no significant meaning but serve as subtle nods to Troma fans, reminiscent of Newcomb High. Additionally, there are hints suggesting a broader universe resembling Troma’s style could potentially expand from this film. However, he hasn’t given much thought to specific plans beyond general ideas about what they would strive for and what they would aim to steer clear of. In essence, it’s more like a conceptual vision rather than a set strategy.
The outcome largely hinges on the reception of the current project. If there seems to be interest in a follow-up, I’d be open to it. However, I’m equally content if this stands alone as a complete story. Should someone express a desire for a sequel, we’ve pondered potential ideas, but for now, I’m just keeping an eye on the response.

Lloyd Kaufman suggests that the responsibility for “Blair and the gang” (presumably referring to the characters in the Toxic Avenger series) might now lie with Macon, given that they passed Toxie’s mop to him at the San Diego Comic Con. It seems they consider Macon as the new ‘Toxic Avenger’. Furthermore, Kaufman is eager for Macon Blair’s version of the Toxic Avenger and believes it will be a big success. He also hints that there could potentially be more Toxic Avenger movies in the future.
