TOWIE Star Jess Wright Opens Up About Debilitating Postnatal Depression

Jess Wright openly confessed that during her challenging struggle with postnatal depression, she yearned for the world to pause.

In a brief documentary for the BBC, a woman, age 39 and mother of a 2-year-old son named Presley, who she shares with her partner William Lee-Kemp, spoke candidly about her personal struggles in an effort to bring attention to similar experiences faced by others.

Previously known TOWIE star courageously shared her personal struggle with depression and persistent fight against anxiety, opening up in conversations with women and families who similarly grapple with these challenges.

Approximately 20% of women and 10% of men may experience mental health issues like depression or anxiety during pregnancy or within a year after giving birth.

In this week’s broadcast, set for Friday, Jess shares that she’s battled depression and anxiety since her late twenties. She typically manages these conditions with medication, which usually helps keep them in check.

A few days following the birth of my son Presley, I encountered a form of depression that was entirely new to me – it was overwhelming and left me incapacitated.

‘I couldn’t enjoy anything with my new son and I wanted the world to stop so I could get off.’

During a conversation with Dr. Lynsey McAlpine, a Perinatal Psychiatrist, Jess shared that she didn’t receive straightforward guidance regarding her personal medication use during her pregnancy.

During my pregnancy, there was some uncertainty regarding the medication I was taking, specifically if I needed to stop taking it while I was expecting.

Jess added: ‘Having a baby is wonderful but also tough for many people.

Instead of saying ‘But knowing where to turn for support, has helped me feel better prepared if I decide to have another child,’ you could say: ‘Knowing who to seek help from makes me more confident about the prospect of having another baby.’ This way, the sentence conveys the same meaning but in a simpler and easier-to-understand manner.

In the previous year, I found myself bravely sharing my personal struggle – the heart-wrenching health crisis my son, Presley, was facing. During those challenging times, I turned to prayer, seeking solace and hope from a higher power that he would pull through.

In August 2024, she sadly shared the tragic news that her son had been identified as having a relatively uncommon heart condition known as Bicuspid Aortic Valve.

Approximately one percent of the populace may be affected by a Bicuspid Aortic Valve condition, where the heart valve features just two smaller components, known as cusps or leaflets, rather than the usual three.

In a recent chat, the celebrity confidently shared that her boy is thriving for now, however, he’ll need continuous supervision and attention in the future.

She shared with Closer: “It’s difficult and dreadful, yet we must accept it. Now, we need to find a way to cope, and fervently hope for positive outcomes until the time comes for surgery.

Jess additionally mentioned that it’s hard to suspect any mistakes when observing her son, as he’s such an adorable angel.

As for when Presley will undergo surgery, I must admit I’m uncertain at this point in time. However, if given the chance, I would alleviate his discomfort instantly.

She went on saying, “I’d gladly trade hearts with him any day of the week. Every evening, I fervently hope for his well-being.

In May of 2019, Jess and her spouse, William, first crossed paths. They exchanged wedding vows in September, 2021, and by May, 2022, they were delighted to welcome their first child into the world.
