Tower of Saviors faces backlash over alleged Wuthering Waves character animation copy, issues an apology to fans

Story Highlights

  • Fans accused Tower of Saviors of copying Hiyuki’s animation from Wuthering Waves, with one sequence even appearing to directly feature Hiyuki’s reflection.
  • Mad Head Limited removed the promotional video and issued an official apology.
  • The studio plans stricter content reviews and AI production guidelines going forward.

The popular action RPG, Wuthering Waves, developed by Kuro Games, is facing criticism after players spotted a close resemblance between an animation for one of its characters and a promotional video for the older game, Tower of Saviors. The controversy centers around claims that Wuthering Waves copied the animation of a character named Hiyuki.

A reflection mistake made the controversy even worse for the Tower of Saviors

The recent controversy started when Tower of Saviors released a promotional video for its new character, Destined Khaganhood – Genghis Khan. Shortly after, fans noticed striking similarities between scenes, camera work, visual effects, and animations in the video and the Resonance Liberation animation of Hiyuki from WuWa.

The problem really escalated when fans spotted what seemed to be a production error in the video. They noticed a reflection that appeared to show Hiyuki, a character from the game WuWa, instead of Genghis Khan from Tower of God. This quickly spread online, and many people accused the studio of copying another game’s character, with some claiming the resemblance was blatant – as one person put it, “They didn’t even try to hide Hiyuki.”

Mad Head responds after facing backlash from players, with the studio taking corrective action

Okay, so I was really worried about the whole situation with the new ToS promotional video, but I’m glad Mad Head Limited finally addressed it. They officially apologized a few days ago, admitting that parts of the video were too similar to someone else’s work – they said it didn’t meet their standards for promotional content. They quickly took the video down and said they’re looking into how this happened internally, which is good to hear. It’s a relief they’re taking responsibility!

The studio announced it’s working to win back fans by improving how it reviews content, checks promotional materials, and sets rules for using AI in production. They’re also stopping the practice of featuring work by other companies in their promotions. As a small apology, players will receive 5 Magic Stones. This is the second time this week the studio has faced plagiarism accusations, following similar concerns with Ouros and Zenless Zone Zero.
