Located amidst some tranquil spots in the vibrant district of Shoreditch, East London, the architecture communication firm SALT unveiled their brand-new workplace. This innovative office design is a work by THISS Studio.
The design studio aimed to incorporate a maximum amount of recycled materials while planning an adaptable workspace that could serve as both an event venue and a photography studio. At the heart of this project were sustainable, resource-efficient designs.
Expert-level scavenging was employed, with anything no longer needed being re-homed.
The central focal points of the room, large enough to be considered giants, are fashioned from repurposed steel catering tables, where the legs have been shortened and affixed with wheels for mobility. A countertop was skillfully constructed using scraps of cork and white American oak trimmings, materials that would otherwise end up in a landfill.

Instead of using a permanent meeting room, large linen curtains create flexible spaces designed by London-based textile designer Georgia Bosson, who obtained the remaining fabric rolls from an Irish mill.
If it isn’t newly constructed using recycled materials, then the furniture is pre-owned, like the bookcase shelving that was purchased from Gumtree and previously utilized in a butcher’s shop.
The sustainable paint brand Bleo added color to both columns and beams, giving them a rustic tone. To preserve the building’s past, the flooring was merely sanded down and finished with a flat varnish.
According to Tamsin Hanke, Director at THISS Studio, we both believed in reducing the use of new resources, but putting this belief into action demanded a cooperative, adaptable design strategy. Instead of seeing limitations as obstacles, we transformed them into chances – generating constructive friction that fueled creativity and ingenuity, rather than assuming materials would be easily accessible.
Celeste Bolte, the Founding Director at SALT, stated that our latest space has equal importance for our community and SALT itself.
