Totally Killer vs. Time Cut: Which time-travel movie takes the crown?

As a hardcore horror enthusiast who’s spent countless nights huddled under blankets during marathon viewings of the genre, I can confidently say that “Time Cut” was a disappointing detour on the timeline of great slashers.

Time-travel themed horror films present a fascinating and chilling spin to the genre, carving out a distinctive niche in our affections. They delve into the harrowing repercussions of tampering with yesteryears and tomorrows, fostering an apprehensive and nerve-wracking environment that leaves viewers on tenterhooks.

Totally Killer vs. Time Cut: Which time-travel movie takes the crown?

2023 saw Amazon Prime unleash the slasher film “Totally Killer,” which turned out to be a major success. The response from both audiences and critics was overwhelmingly positive, with numerous individuals praising it as one of the top horror films of that year. I myself have watched it no less than three times, and I’m eagerly anticipating my fourth viewing. Indeed, it’s that impressive!

This film offers an exceptional blend of chilling horror and humor, evoking nostalgia with its unique elements, creative death scenes, suspenseful instances, impressive acting from the cast, and a thrilling storyline that kept me hooked throughout. To put it simply, it’s a truly enjoyable movie to watch.

As a passionate fan, I’d put it this way: I’m deeply engrossed in a thriller that masterfully explores time travel. When the infamous “Sweet Sixteen Killer” reappears 35 years after his first murderous rampage, intending to claim another victim, 17-year-old Jamie finds herself unwittingly transported back to 1987 – the year of the original killings. In this era, she forms an alliance with her mom’s teenage self to prevent the killer from striking again before his reign of terror begins.

Actress Kiernan Shipka, known for her role in “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” takes on the lead character of Jaime. Alongside her in the cast are Olivia Holt, Julia Bowen, Charlie Gillespie, Lochlyn Munro, Troy L. Johnson, Liana Liberato, Randall Park, Kelcey Mawema, and several other talented actors.

Totally Killer vs. Time Cut: Which time-travel movie takes the crown?

After enjoying the terrifyingly good movie “Totally Killer,” I eagerly anticipated another horror flick that involved time travel. Eventually, Netflix brought out “Time Cut” on their streaming service on October 30, 2024. Despite its similarities to “Totally Killer,” I wasn’t about to complain. In fact, I was excited for more time-travel themed horror films! However, it turned out that the more of these movies, the less satisfying they became – a lesson learned.

The story unfolds around a gifted teenager named Lucy Field, who unintentionally jumps back in time to the year 2003, mere days before her sibling’s tragic death at the hands of an unknown assailant in a mask. In this past, she embarks on a mission to prevent the murderer from wreaking havoc. However, traveling through time often bears consequences, and Lucy must think carefully to ensure she doesn’t disrupt the course of future events.

In this production, Madison Bailey assumes the lead role as Lucy Field, with Antonia Gentry from ‘Ginny & Georgia’ portraying her older sister Summer Field. Tragically, Summer is killed by an unknown assailant in the storyline. Joining them are Griffin Gluck, Jordan Pettle, Megan Best, Samuel Braun, Sydney Sabiston, Rachael Crawford, and Michael Shanks, making up the rest of the talented cast.

As a die-hard horror fan, I had high hopes for Time Cut, with its intriguing plotline and star-studded cast. However, I must admit, the film fell short of my expectations. It didn’t feel like a well-crafted piece but more like something hastily put together. The revelation of the killer’s identity was hardly surprising – it was as predictable as a clockwork mechanism. To classify this movie as a slasher, the kill scenes should have been more creative, even given its TV-14 rating. Frankly, I expected better.

Now, let’s talk about the acting. While the acting of the two main leads was great, and Gluck did an amazing job portraying his role as Quinn, the acting of the other cast members was subpar, in my opinion. The ending was very underwhelming, too. I feel like things ended too quickly and that we needed one more shocking bomb or surprise before things wrapped up. Instead, I feel like the writers took the easy way out.

Frankly, what truly stood out in that film was an exceptional soundtrack filled with tunes from the millennium’s beginning. It created a delightful nostalgic ambiance, but I must admit it didn’t leave me thinking it was the greatest cinematic experience of all time. However, if I find myself revisiting it again, which is possible, it won’t be for quite some time. Instead, I’m diving into my fourth viewing of Totally Killer, as Time Cut pales in comparison to its awesomeness.
