Even though Hulu is likely to become part of Disney+, it’s still a top-notch streaming service, particularly for science fiction fans. It has a great selection of both popular movies and TV shows, as well as some lesser-known but excellent titles.

The X-Files (1993-2018)

When talking about science fiction TV, The X-Files always comes to mind. This show, which began in 1993, was successful because of its straightforward idea: it followed FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully as they looked into mysterious and unexplained events.
The show’s success came from the contrasting personalities of its main characters. Mulder enthusiastically pursued theories about the unexplained, while Scully approached everything with a scientific and skeptical mind. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson had fantastic on-screen chemistry, which was a key ingredient in the show’s long run.
The show’s science fiction elements were incredibly well-executed, earning widespread praise and often being considered among the best TV episodes ever made. It consistently delivered, no matter if the focus was on aliens, mutants, or other fantastical subjects.
Firefly (2002-2003)
When people talk about the greatest sci-fi TV shows of all time, Firefly often comes up. It’s unusual for a show that only ran for one season to remain so popular, but Firefly has had a huge and lasting influence. Even now, dedicated fans still discuss the show and gather at conventions celebrating it.
Created by Joss Whedon, Firefly was a science fiction series set in 2517. The show centered on the crew of the spaceship Serenity, a group of independent individuals navigating life after humans colonized a new star system. The talented cast included Nathan Fillion, Summer Glau, Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin, Gina Torres, and others.
Though Firefly didn’t initially attract a large audience, it’s since become a beloved cult hit. A movie based on the series came out a few years ago, and now fans can also enjoy role-playing games and comic books set in the Firefly universe. It’s a fantastic space adventure and perfect for watching all the way through on Hulu.
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (2004)
By 2004, Jim Carrey was known mostly for comedy, and Kate Winslet for dramatic roles, so it might have surprised people to see them together in a science fiction film. However, that’s exactly what happened, and the movie became a sci-fi favorite.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a fascinating science fiction film. The story follows Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet as a couple who choose to erase each other from their memories following a painful split. It’s a movie that’s both thought-provoking in its scientific concepts and deeply moving as a love story.
Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet give outstanding performances in this film, which won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Critics loved it, and many people who were teenagers when it was released still consider it one of their all-time favorites.
Lost (2004-2010)
J.J. Abrams’s show Lost dramatically changed television. It began with a captivating premise: the survivors of a plane crash finding themselves stranded on a mysterious island. Even just that initial concept could have made for a compelling series.
What really set Lost apart was its science fiction. From the start, mysteries like the Smoke Monster and polar bears in the tropics grabbed viewers. As the show progressed, it became even more ambitious, introducing time travel and delivering some incredibly surprising plot twists.
When Lost was on TV, it dominated conversations everywhere. Everyone was eager to uncover the mysteries of the island, like who ‘The Others’ were, what the island’s purpose was, and how the characters’ stories would end. Despite many attempts, no show has quite captured the same magic since.
The Host (2006)
Most people now know Bong Joon Ho thanks to his groundbreaking film, Parasite, which famously won four Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director. However, over ten years earlier, he directed a fantastic sci-fi movie called The Host that deserves more attention.
Set in Seoul, The Host centers around a terrifying event: a young girl’s abduction by a massive creature living in the Han River. The story primarily follows the girl’s father as he bravely breaks out of quarantine to find and rescue her.
While not as famous as Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite or Snowpiercer, The Host is a standout film in his collection. It’s a brilliantly made monster movie that successfully blends science fiction with a strong emotional connection to its characters.
Fringe (2008-2013)
Many science fiction shows have tried to replicate the success of Lost, but few have managed it. Even J.J. Abrams, one of the creators of Lost, attempted to create another complex mystery with Fringe in 2008, which became a famously twisty and visually impressive show.
Although it didn’t reach the same level of popularity as Lost, Fringe was a big hit, running for five strong seasons. The series centered on an FBI agent, a gifted but troubled scientist, and the scientist’s son, who worked together in the agency’s Fringe Division to investigate strange and unexplainable events.
Fringe successfully translated complex science fiction ideas—like alternate realities and the possibilities of enhancing humanity—into a compelling television series. It delivered everything fans look for in a good sci-fi show.
Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes (2014)
The Planet of the Apes story has been retold many times, starting with the classic films from the 1960s and 70s, and including Tim Burton’s 2001 version. But the series of three films released in the 2010s is widely considered the best the franchise has to offer.
The first and third Planet of the Apes movies are both strong, but the second film is truly exceptional. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes takes place ten years after a deadly virus dramatically reduced the human population, and shows a world where apes, under the leadership of Caesar, have become the dominant species.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is a critically acclaimed film, largely thanks to Andy Serkis’s impressive portrayal of Caesar. The movie expertly creates suspense as it shows the beginnings of the conflict between apes and humans.
Poor Things (2023)
Yorgos Lanthimos, known for his unique and often strange films, brings a fresh take to the sci-fi genre with Poor Things. He’s gained recognition through award-winning movies, particularly for the acclaimed performances of Emma Stone.
Emma Stone consistently gives excellent performances in Yorgos Lanthimos’ films, but her role in Poor Things is arguably her best yet. This film offers a fresh and unique perspective on the classic Frankenstein story, following Bella Baxter, a woman revived in Victorian London with a brain transplant.
The character has the brain of a fetus, which creates a fascinating and unusual premise – a fully grown woman with the mind of an infant. This sets the stage for a truly unique science fiction experience, and the film is absolutely worth watching for Emma Stone’s incredible performance.
Alien: Earth (2025)
The Alien movies are among the most famous science fiction series ever made. Starting in 1979, the films have continued for decades, with the first two installments becoming widely recognized classics. Though the quality has varied over time, the recent 2024 film, Alien: Romulus, has been very well-received.
The latest installment in the series is a TV show called Alien: Earth. While it still includes the iconic Xenomorphs fans expect, it tells a separate, standalone story. Ultimately, the show proved to be very engaging.
Set two years before the first Alien film, the show Alien: Earth focuses on humanity’s quest for eternal life through advanced technology like cyborgs and artificial beings. It tackles complex ideas and stands out as a strong addition to the Alien universe.
Predator: Badlands (2025)
As a huge sci-fi fan, I think the Predator franchise is seriously hitting its stride right now! The first movie is legendary, but honestly, the sequels were pretty hit or miss. Then Prey came along and totally blew me away – it’s an incredible prequel, and I’d put it right up there with the best sci-fi on Hulu.
The Predator franchise recently saw success with Predator: Killer of Killers, which received the highest ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. Now, Predator: Badlands, a new installment available on Hulu, is also proving popular. This one stands out by telling the story from the perspective of a Predator character.
The movie centers on a young and underestimated Yautja who embarks on a dangerous hunt to take down a seemingly invincible predator, hoping to prove his worth. During his journey, he encounters both a synthetic clan and a native creature of the planet. Ultimately, it’s a fantastic film, made even better by Elle Fanning’s impressive performance in two roles.
