Top jeweller says ‘London is too risky to wear a gold Rolex’: EDEN CONFIDENTIAL

However, jeweller Stephen Webster claims that it’s now too risky to wear pricey accessories in London, citing the high crime rates under Labour Mayor Sadiq Khan. He believes London has become a crime-ridden capital where expensive items make you a target.

‘You need to use your head,’ Webster explained to me at the launch party for Nela London. ‘Don’t go showing off a gold Rolex around London. It’s just foolish.’

‘It will attract the wrong kind of attention and can make you a target.’

Oh my gosh, you won’t *believe* what happened! Earlier this year, I was absolutely devastated to find out that Susan Hampshire, you know, the incredible actress from The Forsyte Saga and Monarch Of The Glen – she’s 88, can you imagine?! – was actually robbed right there on the Tube! I was so worried about her. It’s just awful!

‘I was robbed on the subway recently,’ she explained, and continued: ‘I really wish I’d hidden my money in my bra, because I ended up losing both my phone and my purse.’

Reports of violent crime on the London Underground have been consistently rising since Sadiq Khan became mayor in 2016, and 2023 saw the highest number of incidents ever recorded.

Earlier this month, I reported that Caroline Stanbury, a friend of Prince Andrew, deliberately chose not to wear a lot of jewellery when she came to the UK, because she was worried about security. Webster, aged 66, thinks his jewellery designs are more secure than those made by other companies, including Graff Diamonds, founded by the British billionaire Laurence Graff. Graff is known for extravagant pieces like ‘The Hallucination’, a one-of-a-kind watch for women worth over £40 million.

‘My work isn’t like the extravagant pieces you’d find from Laurence Graff,’ Webster explains. ‘I don’t create necklaces with $10 million price tags. I design jewellery for everyday wear – pieces people actually use. I made that decision a long time ago. And thankfully, I’ve never had a customer tell me they were robbed for a Stephen Webster piece. So, things are going well.’

Joanne, whose brother Kevin is also a professional dancer on Strictly Come Dancing, appeared both surprised and thrilled when presented with a diamond ring in front of their friends and fellow musicians, who had come to watch. She playfully said: ‘Got bored so we’re getting married, cheers.’

 

Lydia Forte, the elder daughter of Sir Rocco Forte, held a grand Six Chefs’ Dinner at her family’s Brown’s Hotel in Mayfair over the weekend to benefit the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. Things nearly went wrong, though, when Andrew Wong, a celebrated chef with two Michelin stars at his London restaurant, arrived on crutches.

‘He hurt his leg, but he was really determined to be here, so he got some crutches and came anyway,’ explains Adam Byatt, the person in charge of the menu. ‘He still hasn’t gone to see a doctor.’ The guests also heard from someone who had been successfully treated for breast cancer at the Royal Marsden.

She explained that meeting the Princess of Wales, a fellow patient at the London hospital, had given her a lot of encouragement.

Kelly, 66, known as the Queen of taupe, had a bone health check – a DEXA scan to measure mineral density – as recommended by the NHS for women after menopause. Kelly jokes: ‘It’s just a shame I don’t have the face of a 20-year-old to go with it.’

Showbiz agent Jonathan Shalit reports that Prince William, upon meeting Kelly, remarked, “My wife will be so jealous I met you – she’s a big fan.”
