Top Gun’s Joseph Kosinski Takes on Miami Vice with Writer Dan Gilroy for Epic Reboot
The classic TV series, “Miami Vice,” created by Anthony Yerkovich and Michael Mann, remains captivating even 35 years after its debut, thanks to its distinctive take on police dramas that makes it a must-watch again. Intrigued by the series, producer Michael Mann himself directed a movie adaptation in 2006 featuring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx. Regrettably, this film didn’t fare well with critics or viewers. Currently, Universal Pictures is revitalizing the franchise with a new director and writer to breathe fresh life into the upcoming reimagining of “Miami Vice.
According to Deadline’s latest report, director Joseph Kosinski will lead the upcoming “Miami Vice” film project. Dan Gilroy is set to pen the script for this exciting new movie. Additionally, Dylan Clark and Kosinski himself will be producing the film. This team certainly boasts a wealth of talent. Notably, Kosinski has garnered acclaim for his work on the 2021 blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick”, and he often works closely with actor Tom Cruise, as seen in their collaborations on movies like “Oblivion”.
Dan Gilroy is primarily recognized for his 2014 directorial debut in the movie “Nightcrawler,” where he also penned the script, featuring Jake Gyllenhaal. His latest works include writing and directing “Velvet Buzzsaw” in 2019, as well as producing the yet-to-be-released film “Magazine Dreams” starring Jonathan Majors. With the passage of time since the last “Miami Vice” production, Kosinski now has an opportunity to breathe new life into this franchise and potentially launch a fresh blockbuster cultural sensation, much like the revival of “Maverick.
Joseph Kosinski Already Has a Highly Anticipated Summer 2025 Film
Recently, Joseph Kosinski has been back in the limelight due to his work on the upcoming movie “Top Gun: Maverick.” Apart from “Oblivion,” his other notable directorial projects include the 2010 film “Tron: Legacy,” which was a highly anticipated sequel and one of Disney’s most daring projects at the time. Earning over $400 million globally on a budget of $170 million, it seems like a precursor to the success he would later achieve with “Maverick.” Additionally, Kosinski has consistently leveraged the IMAX format in his work, a technique that could potentially be applied to “Miami Vice” when production begins.
It’s unlikely that “Miami Vice” will start filming anytime in the near future, as the director is committed to an unnamed UFO project for Apple TV+, being produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. But don’t worry, moviegoers won’t have a long wait for Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski’s next movie, “F1,” which is slated to hit theaters on June 27 this summer. Starring Brad Pitt, it promises an action-packed experience centered around Formula One racing, captured using IMAX film cameras and showcasing practical effects that emphasize the drivers at work.
The title “Miami Vice” offers potential for a contemporary action movie remake, considering its intense crime-thriller aspects. It’s intriguing that Michael Mann isn’t involved this time around, as he’s preoccupied with his upcoming project, “Heat 2“, which is a follow-up to the highly praised film he directed in 1995. Here’s hoping directors Kosinski and Gilroy can develop a plot that revives the popularity of “Miami Vice” while showcasing their innovative techniques for crafting compelling action scenes.
