Enthusiasts of the movie Top Gun have something to look forward to, as screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie has announced that the plot for the next installment is already finalized.
After the massive success – both critically acclaimed and commercially profitable – of the 2022 movie “Top Gun: Maverick”, plans for a third installment were quickly approved. The production has been ongoing since then.
On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, McQuarrie, a collaborator with Ehren Kruger and Eric Warren Singer in writing the screenplay for Maverick, shared some recent developments about the ongoing project.
McQuarrie stated with confidence, “We’ve already got this project in the pocket,” he said, having also produced Maverick. He admitted that he initially thought it would be challenging, but this mindset proved beneficial as he entered the room thinking, “Let’s see what we can make of this!
Ehren Kruger proposed an idea, to which I responded “Mhm, actually” and we had a single discussion about it. As a result, a foundation has been established for further development. Therefore, it’s not challenging to solve this problem. The reality is, none of these problems are particularly difficult to address.

Once you begin analyzing these films, you may find yourself wondering about their creative choices. It’s not about the action itself, nor the magnitude or intensity of the action sequences, nor the technical aspects surrounding them. Instead, it boils down to the emotional impact they convey.
McQuarrie’s remarks follow in line with Tom Cruise’s optimistic statement about the same project. Interestingly, Cruise is also developing a continuation, or what we might call a legacy sequel, to the 1990 film “Days of Thunder.

In his words, Cruise shared that they are brainstorming and discussing numerous story ideas. It took him 35 years to finalize the script for “Top Gun: Maverick,” and now they’re contemplating sequels for both “Days of Thunder” and “Top Gun: Maverick.
McQuarrie and Cruise are at present promoting their joint project, titled “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning“, where Tom Cruise character Ethan Hunt is on a mission to rescue the planet from the grip of an ominous force known as The Entity.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is in cinemas now.
