Top Gun 3 and Days of Thunder 2: ‘Cracked’

Christopher McQuarrie, the director who has steered the more recent Mission: Impossible film series, including the climactic movie Mission: Impossible – Fallout, is a close collaborator of Tom Cruise. He’s recently shared significant insights about both Top Gun 3 and Days of Thunder 2. While McQuarrie has not only directed Cruise in the iconic spy series but also contributed to its scriptwriting, he will be actively involved in the upcoming sequels as well. Although updates on these projects have been scarce, McQuarrie now states that they’ve finally found the right narratives for both Top Gun 3 and Days of Thunder 2.

During a chat on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast hosted by Josh Horowitz, McQuarrie discussed the latest escapades of Ethan Hunt. While the focus was primarily on Mission: Impossible, Horowitz seized the opportunity to inquire about two of Cruise’s intriguing upcoming projects. Firstly, he questioned McQuarrie about the difficulty of finalizing Top Gun 3 compared to Top Gun: Maverick, and McQuarrie shared an exhilarating update on this topic.

Nope, I’ve got it all figured out. I already know its nature and solving it wasn’t tough as I initially anticipated. Surprisingly, that location offers a great starting point for our endeavor. As we step into the room, you might exclaim, ‘Alright, what’s our plan?’ And Ehren Kruger had an idea to share. With a single discussion, the foundation was laid, making it relatively simple to develop further.

McQuarrie went on to disclose that although it appeared Rooster and Maverick’s storyline might have reached its conclusion, the forthcoming sequel could potentially focus on them once more. Horowitz quickly got to the point and asked if McQuarrie would be directing Top Gun 3, taking over from Joseph Kosinski. McQuarrie responded that, at this moment in time, he hadn’t given it much thought. However, he did mention that he has conducted extensive research on creating a film similar to the one directed by Tony Scott (the director of the original 1986 Top Gun). Although he didn’t explicitly say so, he also hinted at Cruise’s upcoming sequel to the 1990 sports drama Days of Thunder 2, a film that was also directed by Tony Scott.

In just a few moments, I could tell exactly where the storyline of the movie was heading. Glancing at the reviews for Top Gun: Maverick, I swiftly turned to Tom and exclaimed, “It’s going to be like Days of Thunder!

Christopher McQuarrie Reveals Tom Cruise Could Reprise Another of His Most Famous Roles

Discussing potential plot points for both “Top Gun 3” and “Days of Thunder 2” from Christopher McQuarrie is thrilling but not surprising. However, during this chat, he also found it amusing to discuss Les Grossman, the side-splitting character played by Tom Cruise in the war comedy “Tropic Thunder.” This 2008 film is packed with unforgettable characters, but Cruise’s portrayal of the profane studio executive has been his most memorable comedic role. After the movie was released, Cruise reprised the character for an appearance at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, mimicking Grossman’s dance moves just like in the film’s ending. Since then, fans have been anticipating a spin-off, but one has yet to materialize.

Currently, McQuarrie hinted at a potential Les Grossman film during his talk on upcoming projects, stating, “Events will unfold in some form or fashion, not necessarily when or where you might expect. The discussions we’ve had about Les Grossman are incredibly amusing.” Additionally, McQuarrie mentioned the possibility of Grossman’s return, expressing that it was hilarious.

“We’re talking about it, we’re having serious conversations about it, and how best to do it.”
