Top Boy star lands lead movie role in UK-set biopic

As a fan who has witnessed Jasmine Jobson’s captivating performance in Top Boy, I am absolutely thrilled about her new role as Ramla Ali in In the Shadows! It’s not just about the boxing ring for this incredible actress; it’s about embodying the spirit and courage of a trailblazer who defied cultural and racial barriers.

Actress Jasmine Jobson, known for her work on Top Boy, will take on the main part in a movie based on real events about British-Somali boxer Ramla Ali, who hails from the UK.

Under the title “In the Shadows“, the film features Jobson stepping into the shoes of a groundbreaking professional boxer, replacing Letitia Wright, who was previously slated to play Ali in the movie, as reported by Variety last year.

In a thrilling turn of events, I found myself engrossed in the life story of an inspiring figure, skillfully brought to the big screen by the talented director Anthony Wonke. In this biopic, Finn Cole from “Peaky Blinders” beautifully portrays my husband Richard, while Gershwyn Eustache Jr, known for his role in “Andor”, convincingly plays my boxing coach.

In the Shadows narrates the real-life account of Ali, who along with her family, escaped from Somalia and sought refuge in London. In secret, she honed her skills as a boxer while keeping it hidden from her traditional Muslim parents. Her journey culminated in her becoming the pioneering professional boxing champion to represent Somalia at the 2020 Olympic Games held in Tokyo.

The movie will delve into the romantic tale of Ali and Moore, as they maneuver through obstacles related to culture and race.

Jobson expressed great pride in being chosen for the role of Ramla, as he felt privileged to contribute to the telling of her remarkable tale.

She went on to say, “I’m not just excited about honoring her achievements as a trailblazing athlete who defies boundaries, but also as a profoundly inspiring Somali woman who has triumphantly overcome immense hardships. Her story of being a refugee in the UK holds significant weight and can serve to educate and uplift during these deeply divided times. I’m eager to begin this journey.”

In the announcement about the casting, Ali expressed: “I, just like many others, became smitten with Jasmine following her outstanding portrayal of Jaq in ‘Top Boy’. She has a unique insight into what it means to grow up in London and battle for oneself and one’s position in this world. Her authenticity, grit, and raw emotion are truly unmatched, qualities that can’t be learned. I can’t help but feel thrilled at the prospect of seeing her bring me to life on screen.”

In the Shadows is yet to receive a release date.
