Top 35 Anime Trios That Will Blow Your Mind
When Japanese characters band together in pairs, they either complement each other or provoke one another, with a constant thread of interdependence. In contrast, when there are three, dynamics can become complex, featuring ongoing conflicts, fierce competition, and even jealousy, creating a more intriguing dynamic. Yet, many renowned trios like Jesse, James, and Meowth, or Winry, Alphonse, and Edward, maintain an undercurrent of genuine affection beneath the competition.
In the realm of anime, you’ll find numerous unforgettable trios. Some consist solely of villains, while others house heroes, and there are those that blend both. There are groups with bold, resolute leads, quiet, timid protagonists, and others showcasing remarkable supporting characters. Regardless of their composition, these trios share a common trait: they each add a unique, unforgettable flavor to the narrative.
Revised on May 31st, 2025 by Sage Ashford: Anime trios have always been versatile, encompassing various types of relationships – some are love triangles, while others symbolize an indestructible bond of friendship. We’ve expanded our list to include more outstanding trios from the current era all the way back to the early days of anime.
They Started as Pro-Benders, but Soon Took on Much Greater Threats
In the animated series “The Legend of Korra”, Mako and Bolin, who are siblings with a shared passion for pro-bending, cross paths with the current Avatar, Korra. At first, there’s a bit of friction between them, but they eventually form an alliance known as the Fire Ferrets in the pro-bending arena. Their teamwork not only shines on the field but also extends off it, as they join forces with Korra to combat the Equalists and Amon.
Over time, emotions and duties intensify the strife among this anime group, yet they end up standing by one another. They do argue and make mistakes, undoubtedly, but their friendship forms the heart of The Legend of Korra. Witnessing them guide each other towards growth is enjoyable. However, as Asami takes a larger role in the storyline, the original trio dynamic starts to change, which is why it comes last.
Senku Relies on His Friends To Help Him Accomplish What He Can’t
Despite being a recent addition to the anime world, Dr. Stone boasts one of its finest trios: Senku Ishigami, Taiju Oki, and Yuzuriha Ogawa. Originally classmates in high school, they were turned into stone due to a mysterious occurrence. Fast forward to the future, Senku is the first to awaken, swiftly figuring out how to revive his companions, Taiju and Yuzuriha.
Despite parting ways initially following the Stone Age conflict known as the Stone Wars, these three eventually reconnect once more. While Senku may appear exceptionally competent, a significant portion of his ability comes from recognizing what he’s not proficient in and knowing when to assign tasks to his companions. Taiju contributes his remarkable endurance and strength, while Yuzuriha’s talents enable the revival of all humans that Tsukasa had destroyed.
Nanoha Turned Her Foes Into Her Friends and Co-Workers
In the series, it’s no wonder that Nanoha, who embodies the idea of ‘enemies becoming friends after a fight,’ eventually formed strong friendships with her toughest adversaries. During the initial season, Nanoha engaged in combat with Fate before ultimately persuading her to join forces. In the sequel series, Nanoha A’s, both Nanoha and Fate fought against Hayate’s followers, but eventually managed to win over Hayate herself.
Through Nanoha StrikerS, these three individuals have grown into adults and are all employed by the Time-Space Administration Bureau. In addition to collaborating effectively in combat as some of the TSAB’s most powerful mages, they also share a living space. Remarkably, their exceptional teamwork can be attributed to their shared passion for exerting maximum effort to save others, a sentiment that stems from their own experiences of being rescued by one another.
Working Together, There’s No Job These Three Can’t Pull Off
In the world of anime, Lupin, Jigen, and Goemon form one of the oldest trios that have been friends for such a lengthy period that many forget there was ever a time when they weren’t companions. To begin with, Goemon and Jigen were pursuing Lupin, employing their exceptional abilities to apprehend him. However, it was Lupin’s captivating charm that eventually persuaded both of them to team up with him instead.
In this team, Lupin serves as the strategist, Jigen handles driving and is an exceptional sniper, while Goemon showcases his incredible swordsmanship that borders on the absurd – he can slice through anything from enemies to the very film recording their adventures. Through thick and thin, they’ve stood by each other, starting as a practical alliance but growing into a bond of genuine friendship.
Meryl and Milly Help Vash Avoid Having To Wander Alone
For much of his existence, the renowned Vash the Stampede led a solitary life as a traveler. It wasn’t until he encountered Meryl and Milly that things changed. These women were representatives from Bernadelli Insurance, who took an interest in Vash due to the havoc he often caused. Over time, they shifted their perspective, no longer viewing him merely as the “Human Typhoon,” but as a person instead.
Trigun doesn’t delve deeply into romance, but the subtle bond between Vash and Meryl is moving. Meryl and Milly play crucial roles in helping Vash forge meaningful human ties, preventing his immortal gunman existence from feeling so isolating. They also excel at balancing out Vash’s eccentricities.
Though Other Characters Make Their Relationships More Complex, These Three Are the Real Show
Despite the complex romantic dynamics in the series, which could be more accurately described as a love decahedron rather than a triangle, the relationships between Ranma, Ryoga, and Akane offer genuine romantic tension. The dynamic between Ranma and Akane is particularly intriguing, considering they initially hold mutual disdain for each other. However, Ryoga introduces an exciting element to the storyline, as he initially perceives Ranma as a martial arts adversary, but eventually becomes involved in Akane’s romantic entanglements.
The unusual springs adding to the triangle’s amusement are the ones causing chaos for both Ranma and Ryoga, with only Akane being aware of Ranma’s predicament. Ryoga’s habitual transformation into an endearing pig, which Akane keeps as a pet, isn’t just humorous; it offers Ranma a reason to feel jealous. Indeed, it also presents Ranma opportunities to tease Ryoga more frequently.
Although Other Characters Enter the Picture, These Three Are the Core of the Show
In the anime titled “Komi Can’t Communicate“, we follow a delightful group of three high school friends who enjoy chronicling their everyday experiences. Initially, Shoko Komi establishes a friendship with her ordinary classmate, Hitohito Tadano. Shortly afterward, she also becomes friends with Najimi Osana, thanks to Hitohito’s introduction. Interestingly, since Osana is extremely sociable, she offers an entertaining contrast to Komi’s reserved demeanor.
In the anime “Komi,” Shoko Komi broadens her social circle past the original trio, but it’s these three characters who significantly contribute to the series and shape its identity. They make an excellent group of friends, or ‘best buds,’ and it’s natural that they frequently appear together in many scenes throughout the anime. This core friendship serves as a strong foundation, providing a central point of reference as new characters join the story.
Yukine Often Third-Wheels Yato and Hiyori
The anime “Noragami” focuses on the character Yato as he strives to elevate his status from a minor deity to a major one. Along his journey, he interacts with Hiyori, a girl whose soul can separate from her body, and Yukine, a spirit who materializes as a weapon. Each of these characters has unique traits and aspirations, resulting in amusing situations. Despite their differences, they manage to cooperate effectively.
Yukine and Yato often find themselves at odds due to their contrasting personalities. Yukine tends to view Yato as immature and acting against what’s best for them. However, it is Hiyori who ultimately steps in to remind them both about the importance of kindness towards each other. In this sense, Hiyori serves as a crucial mediator within their trio, maintaining a calm demeanor when the others become overly emotional.
Each Member Has an Interesting Dynamic With the Others
Although Gintoki frequently receives criticism for his laziness from Shinpachi and Kagura, he consistently works hard for their sake. Their bond is built on Gintoki’s repeated rescue of the two from perilous situations. In gratitude, they have become dedicated members of the group, always looking out for him as much as possible. Throughout this dynamic, there are numerous comedic instances, but beneath the humor lies a deep affection and concern for each other.
In certain aspects, Gintoki takes on a paternal role towards the duo, offering them protection and teaching them combat skills. However, it’s important to note that everyone in the group contributes significantly. Shinpachi offers a soothing balance to Gintoki and Kagura’s energetic personalities, while Kagura serves as a constant source of support for both of them.
There Are Familial Ties Between Some Members of This Trio
The threesome that comes together in the anime series known as Case Closed, or Detective Conan, is intriguing because Jimmy Kudo is consistently deceiving his fellow group members. After being miniaturized by a mysterious drug, he adopts the alias Conan Edogawa to shield himself and those close to him. Throughout this period, he resides with his friend and love interest, Ran Mori, and her father, Kogoro Mori. Yet, neither of them is aware of his true identity.
Thanks to Kogoro’s profession as a detective, Conan is able to carry on solving mysteries. With Conan’s sharp intellect, Kogoro’s access to cases, and Ran’s karate expertise, they make an excellent team ready to lend a helping hand. This core group of Conan, Ran, and Kogoro provides a solid base for their adventures throughout the series.
