Top 20 K-Drama Female Leads, Ranked: Iconic Characters That Redefined The Genre

K-dramas cover all sorts of genres, and a strong female lead can really make a good show exceptional. Over the past ten years, Korean dramas have become incredibly popular, boosted by Netflix adding well-known titles to its diverse collection. Netflix also started producing its own original K-dramas in 2018, and they’ve been a big hit.

No matter the story, most Korean dramas feature a female lead who is central to the plot, whether it’s through a romance or as an independent character. Many of these leads are known for being part of iconic on-screen couples, but just as often, they’re strong, individual characters who make the drama memorable and leave a lasting impact.

20. Moon Dong-eun

The Glory

The K-drama The Glory is incredibly intense and disturbing, largely due to Song Hye-kyo’s powerful portrayal of Moon Dong-eun. The story centers around Dong-eun, who suffered years of brutal bullying in school and dedicates her life as an adult to getting revenge.

I just finished watching The Glory, and wow, it really stuck with me. Knowing this story is rooted in real events made the intense scenes even more disturbing. The main character, Moon Dong-eun, is incredibly complex – she’s been through so much trauma, and she’s definitely not a typical ‘good guy.’ Honestly, she left me feeling pretty shaken up. Love her or hate her, though, you won’t forget Moon Dong-eun – she’s easily one of the most memorable characters I’ve seen in a K-drama, period.

19. Cha Jeong-seok

Doctor Cha

Unlike many other medical dramas, Doctor Cha is a feel-good story about Cha Jeong-seok (played by Uhm Jung-hwa) rediscovering her purpose after a difficult divorce. She had previously put her career goals aside to be a full-time mother, but her husband’s infidelity led her to start over.

Watching Cha Jeong-seok face challenges with such courage is truly inspiring, particularly because her younger colleagues initially doubted her decision to return to the medical field. While her life hasn’t been without difficulties, Jeong-seok’s strong commitment to pursuing her goals, even after a long break, is a real triumph.

18. Lee Ji-an

My Mister

I truly believe My Mister is one of the best K-dramas ever made, and the character of Lee Ji-an, played by IU, is just incredible. It’s heartbreaking to watch her – she’s so young, barely in her twenties, but she’s dealing with so much: terrible abuse, a mountain of debt, and she’s completely responsible for taking care of her grandmother. It’s a really powerful and moving story.

Ji-an appears to be a villain, spying, stalking, and even blackmailing others. However, these actions stem from a need to protect herself. The show, My Mister, initially presents her this way, but gradually reveals a much more complex and sympathetic side to her character.

17. Lee Min-kyung

Mad for Each Other

If you’re looking for a truly unique and funny romantic comedy, check out Mad for Each Other. Oh Yeon-seo is hilarious as Lee Min-kyung, and the show is easily one of the funniest K-dramas available on Netflix. The story centers around two people dealing with their own struggles: Min-kyung battles severe paranoia, while Noh Hwi-oh (played by Jung Woo) struggles with uncontrollable anger.

The story centered on two people gradually falling in love and supporting each other’s healing, making it a comforting and enjoyable watch. However, the character of Min-kyung was particularly well-developed. Her caution around men wasn’t simply fear, but stemmed from past trauma, giving her a complex and believable personality. Beneath her unique exterior lay a deeply moving and thoughtfully written backstory.

16. Cha Ji-won

Flower of Evil

Many K-dramas center around romance, but Flower of Evil takes a different approach. Cha Ji-won (Moon Chae-won) and Baek Hee-sung (Lee Joon-gi) seem happily married, but their lives are thrown into turmoil when the case Ji-won is working on leads her to suspect her own husband.

The K-drama Flower of Evil features a truly frightening villain, but detective Cha Ji-won is a strong and capable presence throughout the series. She’s not only physically skilled, but also remarkably resilient and quick-thinking. Even when faced with a devastating betrayal, she remains remarkably composed and doesn’t fall apart.

15. Koo Se-ra

Memorials/Into the Ring

Memorials (also called Into the Ring) is a down-to-earth political drama that also features a believable love story. What really sets it apart, though, is its compelling female protagonist. Koo Se-ra, played by Nana, enters the world of local politics after facing setbacks in her career, and surprisingly, she discovers a genuine passion for the work.

If you’re looking for a K-drama to watch all in one sitting, Memorials is a good choice. But it’s Koo Se-ra’s bold and honest personality that you’ll really remember.

14. Hong Hae-in

Queen of Tears

The K-drama Queen of Tears is a deeply emotional story made even stronger by its excellent actors. When Hong Hae-in (Kim Ji-won), a wealthy heiress, receives a diagnosis of brain cancer, it unexpectedly gives new meaning to her struggling marriage with Baek Hyun-woo (Kim Soo-hyun).

In the drama Queen of Tears, Hae-in and Hyun-woo rediscover their love for each other. However, their happiness is overshadowed by Hae-in’s serious illness and the heartbreaking loss of her memories. Kim Ji-won delivers a powerfully moving performance, and the show’s ultimately joyful conclusion for Hong Hae-in feels truly earned.

13. Seo Ah-ri

Celebrity

Okay, let me tell you about Ah-ri, played by Park Gyu-young in Celebrity. She’s not exactly a flawless character, but she quickly became the most compelling person in the story for me. Her life started out really tough, struggling financially with her mom. But everything changes when someone from her past accidentally thinks she’s a big online influencer, and suddenly, she’s going viral! It’s a fascinating setup, and I was immediately hooked.

Ah-ri’s clever schemes – whether she was sneaking into high-society events or even pretending to die – made the K-drama Celebrity incredibly exciting. It was especially rewarding to watch her plans, good or bad, actually succeed.

12. Nam Haeng-seon

Crash Course in Romance

As a total K-drama fan, I have to say Crash Course in Romance is seriously one of the most romantic shows I’ve seen lately. But it’s not all hearts and flowers, you quickly realize there’s a lot going on beneath the surface. The main character, Nam Haeng-seon, played by Jeon Do-yeon, seems caught up in a typical love story at first, but you soon learn she has a really complex past that makes her so much more than meets the eye.

Haeng-seon was a deeply selfless person who dedicated her life to caring for others. She gave up a promising career in handball to raise her niece, treating her as her own child. Later, she met the man she would fall in love with while simply trying to ensure her daughter received the educational support she deserved, just like other mothers did.

11. Kim Bok-joo

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-Joo

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-Joo is a beloved Korean drama that combines a sweet love story with the world of competitive weightlifting. The main character, Kim Bok-Joo, played by Lee Sung-Kyung, is determined and puts in a lot of effort, even though she doesn’t excel at school.

Bok-joo’s story follows a familiar K-drama trope—falling in love with a friend—but she doesn’t have to sacrifice her ambitions to find romance. She works incredibly hard to reach her goals, which makes her both inspiring and fun to watch.
