To put it simply, January 2025 was quite a special month for mobile gaming, with both fresh and classic games leaving their mark on the rankings.

Leading in downloads was a game called Block Blast , while Honor of Kings remained undisputed in terms of revenue generation. Other notable games such as Roblox, Subway Surfers, and Pokémon TCG Pocket also made impressive appearances in various categories. Monthly download figures show significant variations, and this month, upon comparing the January 2024 data with previous months, I noticed several regular trends, yet there were a few unexpected additions that caught my attention.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the fresh addition, “Cat Chaos: Prankster,” managed to secure the third spot with an impressive 18.4 million downloads. While its art style doesn’t seem particularly unique, the gameplay appears to be engaging enough to keep players hooked. I’m eagerly waiting to see what unfolds next month. Unfortunately, Squid Game: Unleashed narrowly missed out on a top 10 spot in this particular ranking.

Based on the second season’s triumphant reception on Netflix’s TV Series, the game too benefited from the buzz, receiving favorable feedback. Noteworthy mentions include Subway Surfers (14.6 million), Free Fire (14 million), and 8 Ball Pool (11.1 million), all sustaining their popularity. Township and Pokémon TCG Pocket entered the top 15 with approximately 9.6 million downloads each, however, a significant decrease in downloads for the latter was observed.

In terms of popularity, games like “Honor of Kings” often rank high in downloads, but when it comes to financial success, their revenue figures really shine. For instance, “Honor of Kings” managed an impressive $185.2 million in a single month (January 2025) alone, which I believe is largely due to its substantial player base in China, with the global market also contributing significantly. With such stellar performance, it’s likely that “Honor of Kings” will claim the number one spot for the year 2025, unless a major competitor makes a strong entry.

After the top-earning game last year, “Last War: Survival,” which made $143.4 million, came third place with “Royal Match.” This popular game, which has been a staple in the puzzle genre, earned $139.3 million last year, just behind the highest-grossing games. As expected, “PUBG Mobile” and “Roblox” followed closely with earnings of $129.4 million and $114.3 million respectively. The newcomer, “Genshin Impact,” garnered $65.5 million.

Distinguished high-grossing games also include survival game Whiteout, MONOPOLY GO!, Candy Crush Saga, and Coin Master, which brought in $126.9 million, $107.6 million, $98.1 million, and $65.1 million respectively. Pokémon TCG Pocket solidified its position with earnings of $54.9 million, demonstrating that its late 2024 debut has consistently produced substantial income.
