2025 offered a lot of great thriller movies. It’s often tricky to define what exactly makes a thriller a thriller, as they frequently incorporate elements of comedy, horror, and fantasy. The best thrillers of the year showcased this blend of genres, ranging from big-budget blockbusters to smaller, independent films.
As a total thriller junkie, I’ve been keeping track of the best ones this year, and it’s been interesting. You’ll find some are only available on certain streaming platforms, while others were huge hits in theaters. There’s even a follow-up to a really popular movie in the mix! And the cast? Seriously impressive – we’re talking major stars like Denzel Washington, Jennifer Lawrence, and Leonardo DiCaprio all delivering the suspense.
A House Of Dynamite

The movie A House of Dynamite immediately creates a sense of high stakes and excitement. It follows the reactions of key government officials when a mysterious missile is launched at the United States.
The movie unfolds in three parts, each presenting the story from a different viewpoint. It begins in the White House Situation Room, where the characters first discover the missile launch. This opening section is remarkably intense—arguably one of the most gripping in recent cinema—and Rebecca Ferguson gives a standout performance.
The following sections focus on how the military and the President respond and make choices. The performances remain excellent, although the suspense dips a bit and the conclusion sparked debate. Despite this, the show received generally positive reviews, and the first act is particularly noteworthy.
Now You See Me: Now You Don’t

The Now You See Me movies have been a surprisingly big hit in Hollywood over the last ten years. The first two films, about a team of magicians who commit amazing robberies, both made over $300 million, and fans have been eagerly waiting for the third installment.
The movie Now You See Me: Now You Don’t reunites the original Four Horsemen—the team of illusionists—and includes Lizzy Caplan, who joined the group in the previous film. Together, they team up with a fresh group of illusionists and set their sights on bringing down a wealthy diamond heiress.
The series has gained some exciting new cast members, including Rosamund Pike, Arianna Greenblat, and Justice Smith. The robbery sequences are particularly well-done, and many critics believe this installment is better than previous ones.
Highest 2 Lowest

Few director-actor pairings are as iconic in Hollywood as Spike Lee and Denzel Washington. They worked together often in the 1990s on films like Mo’ Better Blues, Malcolm X, and He Got Game, and reunited for 2006’s Inside Man. Now, after almost 20 years, they’re collaborating again.
The new Lee/Washington film, Highest 2 Lowest, is a gripping thriller. It’s a modern retelling of Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low, now set in New York City, and follows a music executive (Washington) who finds himself the target of a kidnapping plot.
While Highest 2 Lowest didn’t receive quite the same praise as other films starring Washington and Lee, it’s still a well-regarded movie with an 83% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s a fun and exciting watch, and definitely worth seeing for fans of these two talented actors.
The Mastermind

Heist stories often make for exciting thrillers, and The Mastermind is no exception. The film premiered to great acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival, had a limited theatrical run, and is now available on the MUBI streaming service, where it’s become a standout title.
Set in Massachusetts in 1970, The Mastermind tells the story of a family down on their luck who decide to rob an art museum, taking advantage of the national attention on the Vietnam War. The film is based on the true story of the 1972 Worcester Art Museum robbery, adding a sense of authenticity.
Critics loved The Mastermind, giving it a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film was also a contender for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Josh O’Connor delivers a standout performance, supported by a strong cast led by Alana Haim.
Die My Love

As a film lover, Lynne Ramsay is one of those directors whose work you absolutely can’t miss. She doesn’t release movies often, but when she does, they’re something special. I’m thinking specifically about films like We Need to Talk About Kevin and You Were Never Really Here – they’re so distinct and really stay with you, haunting your thoughts long after you’ve finished watching.
The same holds true for Ramsay’s new film, Die My Love. The movie generated buzz when Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson were announced as the leads. The story focuses on Grace, played by Lawrence, and her battle with postpartum depression, which spirals into psychosis and creates difficulties in her marriage.
Let me tell you, watching the main character slowly lose touch with what’s real is absolutely mesmerizing. It’s a genuinely chilling film that really stays with you. And everyone’s talking about Jennifer Lawrence – deservedly so. I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see her name in the Oscar conversation again this year.
Black Bag

Spy movies and thrillers often go hand-in-hand, and Black Bag offers a unique take on the genre. Instead of the usual action-packed spy film with gadgets and shootouts, it’s a more subtle story focusing on things like surveillance and deception.
With a director like Steven Soderbergh and a stellar cast including Cate Blanchett, Michael Fassbender, Naomie Harris, Regé-Jean Page, and Pierce Brosnan, Black Bag is a film that instantly grabs your attention with its impressive talent.
I recently watched Black Bag, and it’s a really gripping film! It centers around George Woodhouse, a British intelligence officer played by Fassbender, who starts looking into a list of possible traitors. The shocker? He quickly realizes his own wife, portrayed by Blanchett, is on that list. Honestly, it’s full of unexpected twists and turns – a truly thrilling ride that’s been getting a lot of critical praise, and deservedly so!
No Other Choice

Park Chan-wook is a truly remarkable filmmaker who doesn’t get the recognition he deserves. While many know his 2003 hit Oldboy, his 2016 thriller The Handmaiden is arguably his best work.
Chan-wook is a master of suspense, and his latest film, No Other Choice, is a gripping thriller. The movie, adapted from the novel The Ax, follows a professional in the paper industry who resorts to murder to protect his career.
Although No Other Choice is a thriller, it also includes a lot of humor. Lee Byung-hun, known from Squid Game, gives a standout performance as the lead, earning him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy. The film itself is also nominated for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
Caught Stealing

Several of this year’s top thriller films were directed by highly experienced filmmakers from across the globe. Darren Aronofsky, known for directing acclaimed movies like Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler, and Black Swan, recently released his latest film, Caught Stealing.
I’m really intrigued by this new crime thriller! It follows Hank Thompson, played by Austin Butler – he’s a former baseball pro now working as a bartender. His life takes a crazy turn when he does a simple favor for his neighbor, agreeing to watch his cat. Before he knows it, he’s tangled up with gangsters, drugs, the mafia, and even corrupt police officers. It sounds absolutely wild!
The film Caught Stealing features a strong cast including Gerard Butler, Zoë Kravitz, Regina King, Vincent D’onofrio, Bad Bunny, Matt Smith, and Liev Schreiber. Critics have given it an 84% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, highlighting its surprising plot twists, shocking scenes, and excellent performances.
The Long Walk

Stephen King’s stories have been adapted into movies many times over the years. While films like The Shining, Stand By Me, and Misery are considered classics, the recent adaptation of The Long Walk is quickly becoming one of the best King-based movies yet.
In the dystopian novel The Long Walk, fifty boys participate in a televised walking competition set in the 1970s. They must maintain a speed of three miles per hour, or face deadly consequences. The last boy still walking wins a cash prize and has any wish fulfilled, creating a relentlessly high-stakes situation.
A key reason why The Long Walk is effective is director Francis Lawrence’s experience with dystopian stories – he previously directed films in The Hunger Games series. While it wasn’t a blockbuster, the movie earned strong positive reviews.
One Battle After Another

Paul Thomas Anderson, a highly respected and successful filmmaker, recently released a fantastic thriller. Many consider him one of Hollywood’s best directors, and while he’s made several excellent films, One Battle After Another could be his greatest achievement yet.
This movie stands out from the director’s previous work. It’s a captivating thriller that blends action and humor, telling the story of a former revolutionary forced out of hiding when a dishonest military officer targets him and his daughter.
The film One Battle After Another has become increasingly popular through strong recommendations and has earned high praise from critics, making it a likely candidate for awards. Several scenes are considered to be some of the most impressive ever filmed in the thriller genre.
