Fans are hoping to see Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) and Ziva David (Cote de Pablo) return to the show, especially after recent news from Paramount+. These two characters were key members of the team led by Gibbs (Mark Harmon) and are very popular with viewers.
The characters Weatherly and de Pablo played were so important to the NCIS franchise that they received their own spinoff series, NCIS: Tony & Ziva, on Paramount+. This series had a continuous storyline and a different format from other NCIS shows, with just 10 episodes released on a streaming service. Although it was great to see these characters return, the series has now concluded.
Why NCIS Officially Canceled Its Tony And Ziva Spinoff
The show concluded at the end of the year, marking the end of the couple’s second run with the series. Although Paramount+ hasn’t officially stated why it won’t be renewed, declining viewership is likely the reason, despite a strong initial response from both fans and critics.
The new series NCIS: Tony & Ziva, which premiered on September 4th, experienced a drop in viewers after its initial episode. Data from Luminate shows viewership fell by 51% over the first three episodes. The show begins with Tony and Ziva living in Paris with their daughter, Tali (played by Isla Gie), before they are forced to go on the run following an attack on Tony’s company.
The show started with a lot of potential, continuing the story of beloved characters from NCIS years later. When Tony’s company is attacked and they’re falsely accused, the agents are forced to go on the run across Europe. As they try to evade law enforcement, hackers, and other dangers, Tony and Ziva reconnect emotionally and finally deal with feelings from their past.
The show concluded with a positive and determined ending, as the characters decided to give their romantic relationship another chance. This offered a hopeful outlook, especially considering the series’ cancellation, providing a bright spot for fans of NCIS: Tony & Ziva. Now that the spin-off has finished, there’s a limited but valuable opportunity to revisit their story.
NCIS: Tony & Ziva’s Cancellation Could Open The Door To A Flagship Comeback
Although fans were disappointed to see certain characters leave, their departure created new opportunities. Tony and Ziva’s continued popularity led to their own storyline, and their recent return has proven they still resonate with audiences, giving them a chance to revisit their adventures.
Tony and Ziva were key parts of a popular era of the show, often working with characters like Timothy McGee, Ducky Mallard, Jimmy Palmer, and the team’s leader, Gibbs. Though some cast members have moved on, many familiar faces are still around, and Tony and Ziva’s return allows for a chance to bring those original characters back together.
Weatherly made a surprise return to NCIS in Season 21, appearing in a special episode and also honoring the late actor who played Dr. Mallard. Though fans hoped to see even more familiar faces, Tony’s appearance was a touching and appropriate way to say goodbye.
Weatherly’s return to the NCIS universe shows how the spin-off can actually strengthen the original series. Though the spin-off had potential, these characters might have a bigger impact working within the established NCIS show, reaching its large and loyal television audience.
As a big fan, it’s a little sad that some of our favorites like Pauley Perrette or Gibbs haven’t been back since leaving the show. But honestly, I’d love to see Tony and Ziva reconnect with McGee, Jimmy, and Director Vance! It would make for an amazing episode, even without everyone being there.
