Tony Thorpe, the guitarist for the English glam-rock combo the Rubettes, has died. He was 80.
We are deeply saddened to announce that Anthony John Thorpe has passed away. Remembered as a loving father to Clay, a devoted husband to Shirle, and a cherished friend and mentor – especially within the music community – he faced recent health challenges with remarkable strength and wit. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him or enjoyed his music, leaving behind a void that can never be filled.
The Rubettes came together in 1973 after a group of studio musicians recorded some songs reminiscent of doo-wop, one of which was “Sugar Baby Love.” This song reached the top of the UK charts in 1974, boosted by a performance on Top of the Pops – where they were known for wearing white suits. While also hitting the US Top 40, “Sugar Baby Love” became their signature tune alongside other popular European tracks like “Tonight,” “Juke Box Jive,” and “I Can Do It.”
Throughout their career, the band sold millions of records, mostly in Europe. Thorpe was the lead singer on several of their songs, including the country-flavored hit “Baby I Know.” He departed in 1979, but The Rubettes continued to perform and make music with different lineups.
Alan Williams, a singer from the original Rubettes lineup, shared on the band’s Facebook page that Bill Thorpe had sadly passed away, describing him as being “at peace.”
Dear Tony, we didn’t get to spend much time together, but the music we made and the fun we had will always be remembered. Your incredible talent as a musician and songwriter will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, Cowboy.
