Tony Khan will grant Miro’s release from AEW
As a longtime wrestling fan who has witnessed the tumultuous relationships between performers and promotions, I can’t help but feel a mix of empathy and curiosity regarding Miro’s recent request for his release from AEW.
On Friday morning, an intriguing development regarding AEW’s roster surfaced: according to Fightful Select, Miro has asked for his release from All Elite Wrestling. While this may not come as a shock to some, given his absence from television, the attention is now on how AEW handles a situation with an artist no longer wishing to be part of the company.
WWE has a history of mistreating performers when they ask for their departure. Many individuals have asked to leave the company only to find themselves still under contract, forced to stay at home. PAC is one such example, choosing to remain at home until his contract expired. Mustafa Ali also requested a release, which was denied, and he later made a surprising return to TV before being unexpectedly let go.
In its fifth year, All Elite Wrestling (AEW) has managed to keep most of its performers satisfied without many requests for releases. Tony Khan, the company’s leader, is known for his people-friendly approach when dealing with talent, a stark contrast to other companies’ handling of their roster members. With the recent news about Miro asking for his release, how will Khan address this situation?
According to Fightful’s report, it was confirmed that Miro extended his contract with the company through Spring 2026, which means he will stay until around that time. The article also stated that Miro is making a substantial amount in the millions, and there’s no word yet on whether WWE has any intention of bringing him back. Prior to joining AEW in 2020, Miro was already well-liked by fans. However, he has only wrestled in 11 matches since December 2021.
Prolonging Miro’s contract might face criticism, as it seems to only serve to keep him away from WWE for some time. The relationship seems unsalvageable due to creative differences, and there have been concerns about Miro’s role in the company since he first joined.
A more suitable strategy for Tony Khan might involve allowing Miro to leave. This decision could significantly boost his standing among the wrestling community, including both current and potential future performers. By demonstrating an understanding of the moves that performers desire, even if they’re not always ideal for his business, he can show that he values their needs. Notably, wrestlers such as Mercedes Mone have publicly credited Khan’s accommodating approach for their decision to join AEW.
Miro’s tenure in All Elite Wrestling (AEW) is worth examining as a lesson. Fans used to cheer for “Go to AEW” when their favorite wrestlers departed from WWE. However, Miro serves as an example that such a move doesn’t always yield success for everyone.
