Tony Khan must make a creative shift in All Elite Wrestling

In the main event scenario of All Elite Wrestling (AEW), an intriguing predicament has arisen. This up-and-coming promotion, initially hailed as a refreshing change from the repetitive storylines in WWE, is unwittingly mirroring the formula that ruled at the top of WWE for years. The main event announcement for an upcoming AEW Collision event has sparked resistance among fans, hinting that it’s high time to steer away from the current path.

In the upcoming AEW Collision show scheduled for January 18th, a significant main event has been planned. Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli, Wheeler Yuta, Chris Jericho, Big Bill, and Bryan Keith will be joining forces to face off against Will Hobbs, The Outrunners, Adam Copeland, and FTR. This match is expected to drive the main plotline within the promotion forward.

Glancing at the online reactions, it’s evident that AEW fans are far from content. Unlike in most entertainment spheres where online criticism is often dismissed as a “minor” influence, this isn’t the case for All Elite Wrestling. Tony Khan’s digital presence has essentially merged with his persona, whether he acknowledges it or not. Historically, AEW has responded to strong internet feedback by adjusting their course. It appears that fans are urging Khan to make a strategic change in this match and its narrative.

1. There’s a lot not to appreciate in this situation. The Death Riders storyline seems aimless. They don’t appear as genuine threats to the company since key figures within the organization aren’t at risk from them. Despite Moxley’s talent, this narrative just isn’t resonating and gaining traction. Then there’s Chris Jericho, known as the vortex master. It’s puzzling why Jericho is so close to the main event, considering his position should be used to elevate newer talents instead.

2. This setup has a lot of flaws that I don’t like. The Death Riders storyline lacks direction, and they don’t seem like real threats to the company because major players aren’t under threat from them. Although Moxley is exceptional, this plot just isn’t working and failing to build momentum. Furthermore, Chris Jericho, referred to as the vortex master, doesn’t seem deserving of being so close to the main event. His presence should be utilized to boost up-and-coming talents instead.

3. The issues here are plentiful. The Death Riders angle appears to have no focus, and they don’t come across as genuine threats to the company because key figures aren’t in danger from them. Despite Moxley’s skills, this storyline isn’t gaining traction or building momentum. Additionally, Chris Jericho, known as the vortex master, shouldn’t be so close to the main event when he should be helping to promote younger performers instead.

In numerous aspects, it’s become a significant concern that AEW is increasingly relying on older wrestlers. Notably, Cope (formerly Copeland) is now 51 years old, as is Christian Cage who currently holds an immediate title challenge. Jericho is 54 and Moxley will be turning 40 this year. At one point, AEW was seen as a platform where the younger talents were poised to seize main event opportunities. However, that trend appears to have shifted, and this issue warrants discussion.

Fans of All Elite Wrestling (AEW) are justified in their intense enthusiasm for the program, as it is this very passion that has elevated AEW to significant importance and success during its relatively brief existence. However, Tony Khan must reconsider the main event’s direction because the current path is not only losing steam but also risking pushing fans away entirely.
