Tony Gilroy Fought for Syril’s Shocking Death in Andor—Here’s Why It Almost Changed

The significant demise in Andor season 2 was initially planned differently, largely due to one crucial factor that showrunner Tony Gilroy had to advocate for its inclusion. At the start of Andor’s second season, the ensemble of characters presented an intriguing enigma, given that certain figures, such as Cassian and Mon Mothma, were destined to endure for roles in subsequent Star Wars films, while others, like Dedra, Syril, Luthen, and Kleya, might not.

At the conclusion of season 2 of “Andor”, every character’s outcome was resolved, whether positively or negatively. Characters such as Kleya and Dedra managed to survive; Kleya found herself on Yavin IV with critical information about the Death Star, while Dedra was jailed in a Narkina prison for her actions as an ISB agent. However, characters like Luthen and Syril did not live through the exceptional “Star Wars” TV series. One of these deaths was a significant event in one of the series’ best episodes, but director Tony Gilroy had to argue to keep it intact as planned.

Syril’s Death Caused A Lot Of Controversy For Tony Gilroy

Specifically For A Line Right Before It Took Place

In episode 8 of season 2 on ‘Andor’, it was Syril Karn who met a tragic end. This episode portrayed the infamous Ghorman Massacre within the Star Wars universe. As the climax approached, Syril’s intricate emotions erupted into furious fury upon seeing Cassian, who sparked his transformation into an Imperial officer. The two engaged in a fierce battle before Cassian questioned, “Who are you?” At this moment, Syril hesitated and lowered his blaster, only to be fatally shot by a Ghorman Front member.

During a Q&A session streamed live on the Star Wars YouTube channel and moderated by Ash Crossan from Ebaster, Gilroy shared an interesting behind-the-scenes detail. He mentioned that he had to argue with higher-ups to ensure that Cassian’s line, “Who are you?”, was included in the episode. Since this line served as the title for Andor season 2, episode 8, Gilroy persisted in his stance. He even filmed alternative versions of the death scene, but ultimately stood firm on maintaining Cassian’s line in the final edit.

I put up quite a struggle over choosing that title. There were many disagreements about it. I insisted on titling the episode ‘Who Are You?’ and staked everything on it. There were numerous discussions regarding this… I was firm about my decision… My conversation with him was something like, ‘You can take as many alternative titles as you wish, but when I’m in the editing room, I know exactly what I’ll be using.’

It seems clear that Gilroy was unwilling to change his mind about including the scene in question. Despite any pressure from higher ups, who might have been concerned about the unconventional hero-villain narrative, Gilroy firmly believed that this scene would appear in Andor season 2, episode 8.

“Who Are You?” Defined Syril’s Life & Death

The Line Was Vastly Important To Syril’s Character

One fascinating aspect of this episode is how pivotal the question “Who are you?” becomes, not just for the narrative flow, but also for the development of Syril’s character. It’s surprising to learn that executives at Lucasfilm pushed for a change in this line, considering it titles the episode, symbolizing one of the finest hours in Star Wars storytelling, where a significant portion focuses on Syril’s journey. In this episode, Syril grapples with his realization that he was merely a pawn for both the Empire and Dedra.

Through actions unknown to him as to their ultimate purpose, Syril inadvertently triggered the Ghorman Massacre, resulting in the tragic loss of hundreds of lives. This event left him feeling utterly exploited and deceived by a regime he had long admired and a woman he believed cared for him deeply. The realization that his actions indirectly caused senseless deaths among innocents plunged him into disillusionment. As he grappled with the revelation, Syril began to question everything about himself and his life, which suddenly felt like a fabricated reality.

Who are you?” This question struck a chord with both Cassian and Syril on a superficial level, but its impact on Syril’s life and ultimately his death was profound. However, Syril could not answer this question for himself.

In numerous profound and intricate ways, Cassian’s query, “Who are you?”, resonates deeply with Syril throughout his tale. Despite Syril committing heinous acts, the disclosure that he was manipulated and deceived into many of them, coupled with his poignant sorrow, guilt, and regret in the end, turned him into a profoundly tragic character within the Star Wars universe. This question encapsulates his complex identity more than anything else, making it evident why Tony Gilroy made such an effort to preserve this line during Andor season 2, episode 8.
