On Sunday evening, some of the most prominent figures from Broadway united to honor and acknowledge everything related to theater at the 78th Annual Tony Awards ceremony.

Ariana DeBose made an elegant entrance on the red carpet, wearing a flowing white dress, accessorized with a bold necklace, and letting her hair fall freely around her.

The event takes place at the revered Radio City Music Hall in New York City, with three-time Academy Award nominee Cynthia Erivo serving as the host.

The three-hour program, kicking off at 8 p.m. Eastern Time and 5 p.m. Pacific Time, can be caught live on CBS or streamed on Paramount+ with Showtime. If you’re a Paramount+ Essential subscriber, you’ll have the chance to start watching the show from the following day.

This year features major star power in the lead actor and actress categories. 

In the Lead Actor in a Play category, George Clooney is vying for recognition for his work on the highly successful play “Good Night, And Good Luck,” which he directed, co-wrote, and starred in (the play is an adaptation of the movie with the same title). Meanwhile, Mia Farrow is competing against Sarah Snook from Succession and Sadie Sink from Stranger Things in the Lead Actress in a Play category.

In the lead actor and actress categories for musicals, Darren Criss and Jonathan Groff bring their stardom, while Megan Hilty, Nicole Scherzinger, and renowned Broadway performer Audra McDonald are among the most prominent figures in the lead actress category.

Known primarily for his work in films and television, particularly for his outstanding performances on Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, Bob Odenkirk is now nominated in the category of Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play. This recognition comes from his portrayal in the revival of David Mamet’s legendary play about desperation, Glengarry Glen Ross.

This year’s lineup features Charli D’Amelio, Michelle Williams, Jean Smart from the show “Hacks”, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, and Lea Salonga, who are all actively performing on Broadway at present.

1) Kristin Chenoweth, known for her memorable stage performances, will additionally serve as a presenter, while Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter are set to reunite on stage before their upcoming production of Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting For Godot.” Former Glee star Lea Michele will share the stage with Aaron Tveit as well.

A variety of previous Tony Award recipients have been enlisted to present the awards, with Oprah Winfrey, Bryan Cranston, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Sarah Paulson, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Kelli O’Hara, and Rachel Bay Jones among them.

Moreover, it’s worth noting that the other presenters are quite accomplished, with some boasting Oscars and Grammy Awards in their résumés. Among them are Ben Stiller, Samuel L. Jackson, Katie Holmes, Jesse Eisenberg, Allison Janney, Ariana DeBose, Adam Lambert, Carrie Preston, Danielle Brooks, and Sara Bareilles.

As we approach the 2025 ceremony, a trio of musical productions – Buena Vista Social Club, Death Becomes Her, and Perhaps Happiness – are currently in the lead with an impressive ten nominations apiece.

The Buena Vista Social Club, as its name suggests, is inspired by a beloved Cuban band of the same title. This ensemble released a chart-topping album with the same name in 1997 and was later spotlighted in Wim Wenders’ critically acclaimed documentary, also titled “Buena Vista Social Club,” which premiered in 1999.

Death Becomes Her movie originates from the 1992 Robert Zemeckis-directed fantastical black comedy titled by the same name. The film featured acting talents such as Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn, and Bruce Willis.

Instead of being adaptations from pre-existing music or movies like some musicals, Happy is an original science fiction-romance from South Korea. This story centers around two android helper-bots who unexpectedly fall in love, yet the brevity of their lifespans complicates any future prospects for them.

Among the nominees for the Tony Awards, Dead Outlaw: John Proctor, Sunset Blvd., The Hills of California, and The Picture of Dorian Gray each received seven nominations. Floyd Collins, Justin in Time, and Purpose all garnered six nominations each.

In addition to Dead Outlaw and Operation Mincemeat: A New Musical, several other productions are nominated in the Best Musical category. These include English, The Hills of California, John Proctor Is The Villain, Oh, Mary!, and Purpose. Meanwhile, each of these nominees is also competing in the Best Play category.

Purpose and English have already been honored with Pulitzer Prizes. 

2021’s nominees for plays consist of Eureka Day, Romeo & Juliet, Our Town by Thornton Wilder, and David Henry Hwang’s Yellow Face. For the Best Revival of a Musical, we have Floyd Collins, Gypsy, The Pirates! The Penzanze Musical, and Sunset Blvd. as the contenders.

This year’s shows will spotlight all the fresh and reintroduced musical candidates, alongside “Just In Time” and “Real Women Have Curves,” which didn’t secure a nomination for Best Musical or Revival, but have been recognized with significant other nominations instead.

In 2025, the Tonys will pay homage to the past by presenting a special tribute to the groundbreaking musical “Hamilton” as it celebrates its 10th anniversary, with the original cast joining together for a memorable performance.

I can hardly contain my excitement! I’ll be right there, front and center, alongside Leslie Odom Jr., Phillipa Soo, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Daveed Diggs, Ariana DeBose, Jonathan Groff, and Christopher Jackson – a star-studded lineup who were all part of the original production. Can’t wait to be in their presence!

38-year-old Erivo initially gained recognition through her theater work. However, she subsequently built a thriving film and TV career as well.

The Controversial Actress, who has recently sparked debates following her casting for Jesus Christ Superstar production at the Hollywood Bowl in August, is nearly done achieving the prestigious EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony) award, having already won an Emmy, a Grammy, and a Tony.

During her journey, she was additionally nominated for four Golden Globe Awards, two British Academy Film Awards, and two Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Previously, she graced Broadway with her presence in a well-received version of The Color Purple. This role eventually landed her singing “I’m Here” during the 2016 Tony Awards.
