Tony Armstrong breaks his silence on his last day of ABC News Breakfast after he was called out by his OWN network over ‘astonishing’ error of judgement before landing new gig: ‘It’s been a funny old week’
As a dedicated follower of Tony Armstrong’s career, I can’t help but feel a bittersweet mix of emotions as I bid farewell to this talented TV presenter who has graced our screens for three years. From his nervous beginnings to becoming the public broadcaster’s golden boy, Tony has undoubtedly given us an exhilarating ride that we won’t forget anytime soon.
On Friday, ABC News Breakfast bade a fond adieu to their long-time host, Tony Armstrong, as he wrapped up his three-year tenure in a heartfelt farewell.
The popular television personality, often referred to as the crown jewel of the public broadcaster, disclosed a week ago that he would be stepping down from his position following a three-year tenure.
After making his announcement, Media Watch host Janine Perrett revealed that he had been providing voiceovers for an insurance firm alongside his work on the ABC program.
In his last performance, Armstrong finally spoke up and described his experience at ABC as an exhilarating rollercoaster ride, then humorously added that it had been quite an unusual seven days.
He expressed a blend of emotions. His physical gestures hinted that discussing himself isn’t his favorite topic, yet his profession requires him to be on camera frequently.
‘It’s been such a whirlwind three years. Believe it or not, I was nervous when I started.’
The duration was brief, but it feels like just yesterday. Indeed, it wasn’t too long in the grand scheme of things. Truth be told, News Breakfast provided quite an adventure for me. In essence, it offered me… It delivered a thrilling journey!
As a devotee, I can echo his sentiments by saying: “I wouldn’t find myself at this point in life where I have the freedom to depart on my own accord, and step into whatever lies ahead.
I haven’t quite figured out what it is just yet, but I’m truly grateful to all those who watched and to everyone who shared kind words with me throughout this week, especially.
‘It’s been a funny old week. But yeah, people have been really, really nice to me.’
Armstrong ended by saying he was going to miss his ‘News Breakfast family’.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that Armstrong had been secretly doing voiceovers for an insurance company, despite his role in the ABC’s News Breakfast program. This information was brought to light by the Media Watch program on the network.
Media critic Perrett revealed on Monday that Armstrong, 34, has been working as the voice of NRMA Insurance ads since July.
Perrett, who temporarily filled in as host for Media Watch, found it remarkable that Armstrong didn’t secure approval from the station prior to taking on the new role.
It’s unfortunate that during his last week on News Breakfast, Perrett mentioned that there are concerns about his side job potentially affecting the ABC’s credibility.
‘Tony’s arguably one of the ABCs biggest stars,’ she added.
As a dedicated follower, I can tell you that he’s not just on morning talk shows – he’s also shining on a fresh sports program at night. You can see him in promotional materials for ABC News and he’s the recognizable figurehead of a brand-new five-part series.
‘So we were stunned when we got confirmation that Tony was selling an insurance company as well’.
According to the editorial policy at ABC, while high-profile presenters aren’t strictly prohibited from engaging in outside work, such activities are deemed as carrying significant risk.
According to the ABC, they discovered that someone from their organization had done voiceovers without their explicit approval. This action was allegedly a result of a miscommunication or mix-up involving Tony’s outside representative.
According to the broadcaster, everyone at ABC has been given a duplicate of the external job instructions and informed that these standards must be upheld by each employee. Notably, Tony is a highly esteemed worker and receives unwavering backing from the company.
A stunned Perrett responded: ‘A misunderstanding?’
It’s hard for us to comprehend how an ABC reporter could endorse a major Australian brand without considering it a conflict, given their professional responsibilities.
If your actions don’t violate the rules about external work, which require prior approval, then it’s hard to understand what would constitute a breach.
Media Watch said Armstrong did not respond to its request for comment.
The segment sparked fierce debate on Tuesday morning – even as Armstrong kept mum, not saying a word about the criticism on his own TV show.
As a dedicated fan, I stand by Armstrong’s choice to take on an extra job during his tenure at the ABC. Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson, esteemed hosts of KIIS FM radio, have expressed their support for this decision as well.
On the KIIS FM’s The Kyle and Jackie O show, Jackie expressed indifference and stated that their motto seems to be ‘Focus on work here and earn nothing elsewhere.’
Kyle concurred, saying: ‘Always remain a nobody on TV, it’s just a dismal place to labor… truly unfortunate.’
Last week, when Armstrong shared his plan to leave, a flood of good wishes poured in from his professional peers.
In a heartfelt statement, he said he hoped that he will be able to return to his show as a guest.
‘I’ve been pretty nervous about doing this,’ Tony confirmed.
‘I’ve retired from News Brekkie and my last day will be October 4.
As a devoted admirer, I simply can’t express enough gratitude to each and every one of you. That includes my esteemed colleagues, those unseen heroes behind the camera, the diligent producers, and the viewers who tune in, as well as those who approach me in the street with warm greetings. You all contribute significantly to this journey, and I’m truly grateful for each interaction.
Over the past three years, it seems as if I’ve been riding a roller coaster with a few quick stops, so much has transpired, and it feels like I’ve been propelled by a spacecraft. However, the backing I’ve received from News Brekkie and the media in general has been truly incredible.
I really appreciate it! I’ll surely miss our cozy couch – not so much the alarms, though. But, boy, have we had some fun times on that couch!
