Tom Selleck reveals what it was REALLY like starring on Friends
As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for Hollywood history, I must say that Tom Selleck‘s reminiscences of his time on Friends are a delightful journey down memory lane. His charming anecdotes about the show’s improvised script and the unexpected expansion of his role are truly captivating.
Tom Selleck opened up about his experience on the set of Friends.
Last Friday, the 79-year-old actor, known for his role in ten episodes of the popular sitcom from 1996 to 2000, shared that he had a delightful time on the set and continues to hold fond memories of the series.
He took on the role of Dr. Richard Burke, Monica Geller’s love interest — who was played by Courteney Cox.
The Emmy-winning actor frequently discusses his “Friends” role with Parade Magazine, expressing that it was an unexpected yet delightful chapter in his career.
It was disclosed that certain scenes from the show’s script were ad-libbed, and he boasted about how much the showrunners appreciated his acting that they asked him to return for multiple guest spots.
[The showrunners] recently shared their concept, but there wasn’t any written material or outline provided, so it required some trust on your part,” he mentioned.
Selleck went on to say: ‘I was told I had to perform in three shows. At the final table read, someone commented, “Ah, this is your last performance. I hope you can return.” To which I responded, “No one invited me back.” This ended up turning into ten shows instead.’
The actor also showed interest in pursuing roles in future comedies.
When inquired about his interest in another comedy role, he expressed enthusiasm saying, “Absolutely! I’m open to doing another comedy, as long as it’s the right fit.
‘Friends made people laugh and cry at times. That’s the kind of comedy I enjoy doing. Three Men and a Baby had that, too.’
Originally from Detroit, Michigan, this individual is currently playing the role of Frank Reagan in the CBS police series “Blue Bloods.” Unfortunately, the show was taken off the air in October following a 14-year run.
Selleck mentioned that he might consider starring in a spin-off someday, expressing his affection for the TV persona he portrays.
However, he is yet to receive an offer from the TV network.
The seasoned actor, known for his role in the 2007 crime drama film “Jesse Stone: Sea Change,” expressed: ‘I’m receptive to ideas since I have a fondness for Frank Reagan, but so far, no one has posed any.’
I don’t think he’s planning on retiring and moving away. If he were to move to a small town, I’d prefer we make more Jesse Stone films instead.
Recently, he shared that he was feeling quite ‘disappointed’ following the unexpected and immediate halt of the performances.

Although the series spanned a remarkable 14 seasons, the actor asserts that there are still untold aspects of the narrative and that the conclusion lacked crucial plot points essential to the show.
In a recent interview with TV Insider, he expressed some frustration because during the final eight episodes, instead of discussing an ending for Blue Bloods, he found himself focusing on its continued success.
As an overly enthusiastic fan, I can’t help but share this exciting news! Among the Top 100 Shows from 2023-2024, when you exclude the three football shows, guess where our incredible series landed? You got it – sixth place! It’s a dream come true to be part of such an amazing production that has captured the hearts of so many viewers.
Selleck stated, ‘What irritates me is that the show was often overlooked due to its consistent success since the beginning.’
