Tom Morello, the musical director for Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath’s “Back to the Beginning” farewell concert, and a previous guitarist for Rage Against the Machine, was simply enjoying a round of pinball after the show with his son. However, events took an unusual turn.
While Morello was enjoying a game of pinball with his son, someone tapped him on the shoulder. Not knowing who it was or their intentions, Morello politely asked them to step away, as he was in the middle of a multi-ball round and needed to concentrate on the game.
It transpired that the individual who nudged me on the shoulder was none other than Jack Osbourne, son of the legendary Ozzy Osbourne. He shared with me that his father had a message to convey, and naturally, I was one of those who paid heed when Ozzy spoke up.
Tom Morello explains how he said goodbye to Ozzy Osbourne
As Morello explained at Rocklahoma Live:
The last time I saw Ozzy, it was quite emotional. The day had come to an end, and everyone had worked hard on the show for a long period. We were all hugging and crying… After finishing my game, someone announced that Ozzy wanted to say something. I was taken aback. Firstly, Ozzy unexpectedly attended the afterparty, which was quite astonishing. In our final encounter, I got the chance to kiss his head once more, express my love for him, and thank him for a lifetime of music. His response was, ‘Could you find Sharon? I want to leave this place.’
Tom Morello added, “That’s the perfect coda to the day.”
Surely, Ozzy Osbourne was undeniably unique in his own right. He didn’t strive to imitate others or conform to expectations; instead, he remained true to himself, which was nothing short of remarkable. It’s inspiring that we all aspire to have the courage to be our authentic selves.
Morello’s choices for Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath’s farewell tour were often overlooked but incredibly significant. He skillfully added just the right balance of sweetness and spice to a performance that may have been somewhat dull and unimpressive before the final acts featuring Ozzy and Sabbath.
Rather than just being successful, the whole concert turned out to be a huge triumph, filled with hidden treasures and surprising partnerships. Could it be the greatest day in heavy metal history? Definitely. And one that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression.
As a dedicated music enthusiast, I can confidently say that if Ozzy and Sabbath had not been part of the lineup, the final show would have still been an unmissable event. The fact that Guns N’ Roses and Metallica were on stage was more than enough reason to buy a ticket. To me, these two bands were the main attraction. Ozzy and Sabbath were just the cherry on top of an already amazing concert experience.
