If you’re interested in watching the suspenseful thriller High-Rise, starring Tom Hiddleston, you’ll need to stream it on Amazon Prime Video soon – it won’t be available for much longer. The film, directed by Ben Wheatley, tells the story of Dr. Robert Laing, who moves into a high-rise apartment building after a divorce and finds its residents rigidly divided by social class, with wealthier people living higher up.
Robert finds himself increasingly alone, just like the other people living in the building, as they all become cut off from the world around them. As frustrations build, a terrible event puts the peaceful atmosphere of the building at risk.
If you’re interested in watching or rewatching the movie, you have until November 8th before it’s no longer available on the streaming service.

The film first shown at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2015, has received positive reviews from both critics and audiences.
The film received an Empire Award nomination for Best British Film in 2017 and has a 60% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes as of today.

Okay, so I just read what the critics are saying about High-Rise, and it sounds like it doesn’t quite reach the level of the original book. But they all agree it’s still really good – energetic, the acting is solid, and it makes you think about stuff that’s still relevant today. Basically, it’s a worthwhile watch even if it’s not a perfect adaptation!
Little White Lies described the film as a remarkably funny and frightening satire for modern audiences.
According to a review in The Blue Lenses, the film High-Rise might not be the best adaptation of Ballard’s work, but that’s not a problem. The review praises it as a brilliant example of style serving a purpose, and notes how themes from the past can surprisingly resonate with the present.
I recently read a review in The Australian that really hit the nail on the head. They pointed out that focusing on class is something very British, but they thought Wheatley handled it brilliantly in their work. Even though some people found it a bit difficult or distancing, the reviewer felt it was actually a really insightful take on the whole thing.

Speaking to Esquire in 2016, Loki star Hiddleston explained how he approached his character.
I like to get on the same page with Ben at the start of every film. It’s important to me to understand and match the director’s vision and overall style, so that’s what I aim to do.
I ask people for recommendations – movies, books, music – hoping to understand their tastes and find a common ground. Looking back, I had a pretty good idea of what to expect.
High-Rise leaves Prime Video in the UK on 8 November.
The latest issue of Living Legends is now available! You can purchase Ariana & Witches at newsstands or online for only £8.99.
