A critically acclaimed true-crime drama, directed by Steven Spielberg, is surprisingly gaining popularity on streaming services – over two decades after it first came out.
Featuring Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio in a playful back-and-forth, Catch Me If You Can is the amazing true story of Frank Abagnale Jr., a famous con artist who claimed to have made millions of dollars before his 19th birthday.
Whether or not Frank Abagnale’s story is completely true is debated, but the film portrays it with Leonardo DiCaprio as the likable con artist and Tom Hanks as the determined FBI agent, Carl Hanratty, who is relentlessly pursuing him.

Hey, so that action movie that got an Oscar nomination? It’s finally on Paramount+ here in the UK! I checked it out, and it’s actually trending pretty high – number three, to be exact. It’s just behind South Park: The Streaming Wars and the number one spot is taken by this horror film, The Substance. Definitely gonna add it to my watchlist!
Catch Me If You Can ranks fourth among Steven Spielberg’s films on Rotten Tomatoes. Notably, it’s the only movie in his top five released after the year 2000. Critics gave it a 96% rating, and audiences overwhelmingly approved with an 88% score.

Reviewers have called this Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks film a delightful and enjoyable addition to Steven Spielberg’s work, even though some acknowledge it’s a bit thin on substance, too long, and somewhat repetitive (according to Nashville Scene and Time Out).
The Sydney Morning Herald also praised the acting of both Hank and DiCaprio. This film marked the second of five times Tom Hanks would work with director Spielberg.

The 2003 review noted that the character Hanratty, like the real-life Frank Abagnale Jr., isn’t entirely based on truth – Hanratty’s name in the film is actually O’Reilly. However, both Tom Hanks’ portrayal of Hanratty and Leonardo DiCaprio’s performance as Abagnale are so compelling that they make audiences wish these characters were real people.
According to Rotten Tomatoes, Catch Me If You Can has been surpassed by three films: the 1975 classic Jaws, the 1993 drama Schindler’s List, and the widely loved E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial from 1982. E.T. boasts a remarkable critics’ score of 99%.
