Tom Hanks’ Next Movie Sparks Heated Studio Bidding War

He’s teaming up again with the director of a film he received an Oscar nomination for, and several studios are competing to distribute their new project. There’s significant buzz in Hollywood about it.

According to reports, Tom Hanks is reuniting with director Marielle Heller, who previously worked with him on A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, for a new film called The Comebacker. This heartwarming dramedy centers around baseball and will star Hanks in the leading role, with Heller directing. Both Hanks and Heller are also producing the movie, which is based on a short story by Dave Eggers. Eggers has worked with Hanks before, as his stories A Hologram for the King and The Circle were also adapted into films starring the actor.

Bad Bunny and Colman Domingo Might Co-Star

There’s also talk of popular rapper Bad Bunny and the cast of Sing Sing potentially joining the film, though no deals are finalized yet. Several Hollywood studios are competing to secure the rights, with Sony Pictures currently in the lead. They’ve reportedly made a strong offer and have a good track record with similar projects, having previously released A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.

Inspired by the story of Eggers, The Comebacker centers on Lionel, a sports journalist who’s lost his spark. His life and career are revitalized when he covers a young pitcher brought up from the minors. The pitcher, after being hit in the head by a line drive, starts behaving strangely – even speaking poetically – which unexpectedly makes Lionel’s writing connect with a national audience. The title refers to this impactful injury.

Tom Hanks Will Star in The Comebacker

When a story moves from a book or short story to a movie, some changes are usually made. In this case, the original story is about the San Francisco Giants baseball team, but the movie version will likely feature the New York Mets. It’s currently unknown what roles Domingo and another actor are being considered for, though both have expressed interest. Tom Hanks is the only actor officially confirmed to appear in the film.

As a big movie fan, I’ve been following Tom Hanks’ work closely. I last saw him in Wes Anderson’s quirky and fun The Phoenician Scheme last year. This year is shaping up to be great too! He’s back as Woody in Toy Story 5, which I’m really excited about – it’s coming out in June. Plus, he’s revisiting his role in that Apple war film from 2020. And get this – he’s taking on the role of Abraham Lincoln in a new movie called Lincoln in the Bardo, which is based on a fantastic book by George Saunders.

A release date has not yet been set for The Comebacker.
