Tom Grennan’s Anxiety Takes Over Before Big Show
In the past few months, Tom Grennan has shared that he’s been grappling with anxiety following his ankle surgery.
29-year-old artist known for “The Little Bit of Love,” prepares to deliver one of the most significant performances of his career this Friday evening, concluding the first day of BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend event.
Despite his typical energy, the performer isn’t entirely at full strength on this significant night, having spent the past two months recuperating from an ankle tendon injury.
During an honest conversation with TopMob, Tom, known for his transparency regarding his mental health issues during his career, discussed how the recent injury has impacted him over the past several months.
‘I’m a person like every body who suffers with anxiety and mental health,’ the performer said.

My ankle is injured severely and required surgery for a tendon reconstruction. As a result, I wore a cast for eight weeks. Unfortunately, this means a lengthy healing process. It seems like the source of my anxiety during the last couple of months might stem from this situation.
Tonight, let me try to find a solution, as I’ll need to secure it more – I’m just not at ease with it yet. I believe that’s been causing most of my anxiety for the last couple of months.
During a deeply emotional conversation on Pete Wick’s podcast recently, the artist disclosed the debilitating anxiety he experienced following an unexpected assault on a city street when he was only 17 years old.
The incident, during which Tom was physically restrained by three individuals and repeatedly hit in the face, caused him such fear that he became reluctant to venture outside his residence. (Bedford-born vocalist refers to Tom being from Bedford)
Over the course of his professional journey, Tom has been fortunate to count several influential figures as friends within the music industry. These relationships have provided valuable support during challenging times.
He mentioned to TopMob that his close friend, Roman Kemp, is someone he feels comfortable discussing things with. Roman has been quite vocal about mental health issues, which means they often have lengthy conversations on this topic.
Among my trusted confidants are Harley from Rizzle Kicks, who is an excellent friend I can freely converse with, along with my manager. There are others too, but undoubtedly these three individuals I can completely rely upon.
Over the past few months, a significant amount of events have transpired in my life, during which anxiety has become dominant. Yet, it’s crucial to remember that experiencing such feelings indicates empathy and concern on my part.

When I step onto the stage, there’s a distinct shift in my surroundings. It feels much like being on a football field – once the game begins, all distractions fade away. The same transformation occurs for me when I’m performing; nothing else exists but the stage and my presence upon it.
Crowds at Liverpool’s Sefton Park will be eagerly waiting for Tom’s performance on Friday night.
Tom expressed eagerness, saying he can hardly contain his excitement for what has been referred to as one of the most significant performances in his career.
I’m about to headline the same venue where I played a song on Radio 1’s Big Weekend nine years ago, which was on BBC Introducing. It’s mind-blowing to think that someone might have heard it back then and here I am now, preparing to take the stage as the main act.” He further commented.
Additionally, the northern region holds a special charm for me as well. The folks up there possess an exceptional quality that truly stands out when you visit the north.
Tom too revealed that he’s been working on a new album – which he says will not have any features.
‘No one wanted to work with me,’ he joked.
As an ardent admirer, I can’t contain my excitement for the forthcoming album that promises a deep dive into Tom’s personal journey. It seems he’s baring his soul, revealing his battles with various aspects of life, be it alcohol or drugs. He’s shared profound insights about his life, spanning from his childhood to the present, encompassing family and relationships.

Over this upcoming weekend, a massive crowd of approximately 100,000 music enthusiasts is expected to gather at Sefton Park, where our performer will take the stage.
Four distinct stages will host the musicians – the Main Stage of Radio 1, the Future Sounds stage of Radio 1, the Dance stage of Radio 1, and the BBC Introducing stage.
Tonight, Tom is set to perform alongside an array of talented artists such as Biffy Clyro, Natasha Bedingfield, The Wombats, and James Hype on the same stage.
On Saturday, we’ll see performances by Blossoms, Sam Fender, and Tom Odell, followed by sets from Jorja Smith, Lola Young, and Tate McRae on Sunday. Additionally, there will be appearances by many other artists.
