Tom Glynn-Carney teases Aegon will be more “unpredictable” and “volatile” in House of the Dragon season 3

Tom Glynn-Carney teases Aegon will be more "unpredictable" and "volatile" in House of the Dragon season 3

As a fan who has witnessed the tumultuous reign of kings and queens in Westeros through the Game of Thrones series, I must admit that the finale of House of the Dragon‘s second season left me on the edge of my seat – particularly with the enigmatic character of Aegon. Tom Glynn-Carney’s captivating performance has drawn me into this twisted world of Targaryens, even though Aegon is as charming as a dragon in a nursery.

In the finale of House of the Dragon, we get a lot of hints about what’s to unfold in future episodes, some parts exciting and others not quite as much. One plotline that piques our curiosity is Aegon’s, who escapes King’s Landing along with Larys at the end of season 2. Despite the questionable nature of the character, it’s Tom Glynn-Carney’s multidimensional portrayal that has me hooked. And even though Aegon seems to be at his lowest point currently, the actor hints that his character will become even more intriguing as the narrative continues.

Aegon’s reign on the Iron Throne may have its merits, but it’s undeniably a challenging time for him. Despite amassing supporters and holding the throne, he struggles to govern effectively, often being ridiculed as incompetent. To make matters worse, his power-hungry brother Aemond attempts to assassinate him on numerous occasions. The Battle at Rook’s Rest nearly claims his life, leaving him with long-term injuries. In a shocking revelation during the season 2 finale, he confides in Larys that he can no longer urinate normally due to damage to his genitals – a rather distressing detail.

What doesn’t kill Aegon makes him stronger?

In a chat with Business Insider, Glynn-Carney describes the dialogue between Aegon and Larys as hitting an all-time low for his character. He reasons that at this point, Aegon felt he had nothing left to lose, and due to his injuries, his sense of dignity vanished quite early on.

I think that’s the first time he’s acknowledged that about himself. And as we all know, Aegon found a lot of use for that part of his body. So I think he’s going to have to reevaluate how he spends his spare time.

Tom Glynn-Carney

Although Aegon might face challenges ahead, Glynn-Carney remains optimistic about his character’s journey in season 3. He expressed enthusiasm for continuing the role while in his new physical condition, emphasizing that his injuries won’t hinder him: “Despite the transformation in his physical state, I don’t foresee any changes in Aegon’s unpredictable and volatile nature. In fact, I believe there will be even more to come.”

Now that Aegon has departed from King’s Landing, he must learn to adjust to his new environment. As Glynn-Carney playfully hints, it’s difficult to foresee how he will respond to these changes. Much like his brother Aemond, Aegon is a multifaceted character who holds the spotlight in every scene. The fact that he’s venturing into uncharted territory can only add intrigue to the upcoming third season. So, where does Larys and Aegon end up at the close of season 2? Initially, they may visit the Iron Bank of Braavos, but beyond that, their future destinations remain uncertain.

In the original storyline of “Fire & Blood,” we are aware of Aegon’s ultimate destination, but we won’t reveal that here to avoid spoilers for those who haven’t read the books. Since the show has deviated significantly from the book, there’s a chance that Aegon might be bound for an entirely different place in the short term, at least according to the television adaptation.

Despite certain characters in the second season of House of the Dragon falling short (particularly Daemon), I was pleasantly surprised by others like Aegon. I’m eager to see his storyline unfold in the third season, and with Glynn-Carney playing him, it promises to be just as captivating.

You can find both seasons of “House of the Dragon” on Max. In the meantime, as we anticipate news about the upcoming third season, stay tuned to our updates on other captivating fantasy series right here on Winter is Coming.
