Tom Cruise’s 80s bombshell ex and iconic 90s villain is unrecognizable at 65… who is she?
In a surprising turn, the woman famed as a 1980s sex symbol and later notorious for her roles as a film villain in the 1990s, seemed almost unrelated to her past self when she was spotted in Los Angeles recently.
She quickly rose to fame in one of Tom Cruise’s early well-liked films, developing a genuine relationship with him off-camera during the filming process.
Over the next ten years, she gave a truly memorable portrayal as a chilling nanny who orchestrated a hidden plot for vengeance.
Or:
During the following decade, she captivated audiences with her haunting performance as a malevolent nanny concocting a clandestine plan for retribution.
Both versions maintain the original meaning while using more natural and easy-to-read language.
In my starstruck world, I’ve been fortunate enough to find myself entangled in the lives of some truly extraordinary individuals. Besides Tom, there was Leonard Cohen, the poet-musician whose songs have been my solace; Harry Dean Stanton, the actor who could make me laugh and cry with a single glance; and Bruce Wagner, the writer whose words have ignited my imagination like no other.
Currently aged 65, she was recently seen at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) this week, looking fashionable in a sleek black leather coat, accompanied by her friend.
Can you guess who she is?
She is no one else but Rebecca De Mornay, who starred alongside Tom Cruise in Risky Business and portrayed the ominous villain in The Hand That Rocks The Cradle.
This week, Rebecca was spotted at LACMA wearing a black leather jacket paired with a matching blouse and leggings set.
She completed her stylish ensemble by donning a sparkling pair of blue sunglasses, while letting her signature strawberry-blonde hair fall loose with a fringy style.
Reflecting on my journey, I find myself reminiscing about the days when I first stepped into the spotlight, over four decades ago, following the successful premiere of the iconic teen comedy “Risky Business” in 1983.
In a different role, Rebecca appeared as the escort known as Lana, who was contacted by Tom Cruise’s character Joel (a teenager) when his parents were away from home.
Their on-screen chemistry seemed to have a real-life counterpart, as they were reportedly involved romantically – a relationship that is said to have terminated her romance with Harry Dean Stanton, who she worked with in her first film, Francis Ford Coppola’s 1981 production titled One From The Heart.
For approximately two and a half years, starting in 1982 during the filming of “Risky Business,” Rebecca and Tom stayed as a couple, ending their relationship in 1985.
During that timeframe, some unforgettable films she was part of were The Trip To Bountiful alongside Geraldine Page and John Heard, as well as Runaway Train featuring Jon Voight and Eric Roberts.

In 1992, she launched one of her most popular and enduring films, a production that has stayed fresh in the minds of her devoted followers ever since.
In “The Hand That Rocks The Cradle,” Rebecca portrays Mrs. Mott, a widow whose late husband was an obstetrician-gynecologist. He took his own life in the wake of numerous accusations of sexual misconduct by his patients.
Stricken with grief over her husband’s disgrace and suicide, Mrs. Mott tragically loses the baby she was carrying at the same time.
She resolves to seek vengeance and transforms herself into a nanny named Peyton Flanders, entering the household of Annabella Sciorra’s character, Claire – one of the women whose accusations led to the downfall of Dr. Mott.
In this rephrased version, I aimed to maintain the original meaning while making it more natural and easy to read by using simple and straightforward language, as well as breaking up the sentence into two clauses for clarity.
In the captivating narrative of “The Hand That Rocks The Cradle,” I found myself deeply engrossed in the intricate vengeance scheme that served as the central plotline. This blockbuster, which garnered critical acclaim for Rebecca’s mesmerizing performance, left me spellbound with her dramatic portrayal.
In my latest endeavors, I’ve had the pleasure of being part of the hilarious 2005 film sensation, “Wedding Crashers,” and gracing the screens in the Marvel series, “Jessica Jones.”
Or, more casually:
I’ve recently been involved with some cool projects, like the 2005 comedy hit “Wedding Crashers” and the Marvel series “Jessica Jones.
In her personal life, she was married to author Bruce Wagner between 1986 and 1990, and later had a relationship with Leonard Cohen. Notably, Cohen dedicated his 1992 album “The Future” to her, years before he embraced Buddhism, renounced fame, and moved into a monastery.
Currently, she is a mother to Sophia, aged 27, and Veronica, who is 24 years old. These two daughters are from her previous relationship with the sports commentator Patrick O’Neal, who happens to be the offspring of renowned film actor Ryan O’Neal.
