The latest Mission: Impossible film, The Final Reckoning, starring Tom Cruise, is now a huge hit on streaming services worldwide. This comes after the movie didn’t perform as well in theaters as expected, falling behind Disney’s Lilo & Stitch at the box office.
According to data from FlixPatrol, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is currently the most popular movie on Paramount+ worldwide as of March 22nd. It’s been available to stream for four months, and continues to be a hit with viewers. The film stars Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, an IMF agent who leads a team to prevent a dangerous artificial intelligence from causing global destruction.
The Final Reckoning Faced Stiff Competition at the Box Office
As a big fan of the series, I was really following the performance of The Final Reckoning when it hit theaters over Memorial Day weekend. It was interesting to see how it did, but honestly, it didn’t quite connect with the audience I expected. While it didn’t seem to steal viewers from similar movies, it still opened below what everyone hoped for and, surprisingly, didn’t even make it to the number one spot – a first for this franchise, and a bit of a letdown.
Okay, so it wasn’t a total loss for The Final Reckoning. Disney’s live-action flick did take the top spot, but honestly, it was still a huge weekend for movies overall! The Final Reckoning pulled in $79 million over the Memorial Day weekend – a new record! And when you add up all the movies together, the total box office haul was over $334.5 million. That’s a pretty amazing number, even if it wasn’t my movie at number one!
Despite its high production cost of $300–400 million, The Final Reckoning only earned $599 million at the box office. This was less than expected, as many analysts believed the film needed to make over $1 billion to cover its expenses. However, continued revenue streams are likely improving the film’s overall financial performance over time.
The Mission: Impossible Franchise Went Out with Critical Acclaim
The Final Reckoning was promoted as the eighth – and probably last – movie in the Mission: Impossible series. While it didn’t become a huge box office success, audiences generally enjoyed it, and it’s received some unexpected praise.
Critics and audiences both loved the film, giving it high ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics gave it a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating with an 80% approval score, while audiences rated it ‘Verified Hot’ with 88%. According to Rotten Tomatoes, ‘The Final Reckoning’ is a fitting and exciting farewell to Ethan Hunt, delivering the impossible with its signature style.
Earlier this year, the film received a Golden Globe nomination recognizing its success both creatively and commercially, and it was also nominated for Best Action Movie at the Critics’ Choice Super Awards (with Tom Cruise also receiving a Best Actor nomination in the action genre). Interestingly, this film marks the last project co-produced by the companies before they officially merge on August 7, 2025.
