Throughout their discussion, McQuarrie underscored the significance of the leading role, regardless of whether the audience admires or criticizes it. A secondary character like Les Grossman could make his comments and actions, as he wasn’t saddled with the responsibilities associated with a leading role. Now, he explained that they are brainstorming ways to bring him into focus.

We don’t consciously consider structure as we work; instead, we experiment with different scenes. Having a moment like Tom quietly sitting at a breakfast table, not discussing our film for a while, is incredibly refreshing. Plus, improvising with Tom and working with Les Grossman was one of the most enjoyable aspects of creating this movie.

Could Tropic Thunder Receive a Sequel?

Initially, Tropic Thunder was a hit when it premiered, but over time, it’s become one of those movies that doesn’t hold up as well. Ben Stiller, a comedy genius, directed and co-wrote the script with Justin Theroux and Etan Cohen. The film may have been successful, but it faced criticism for its depiction of intellectual disability and use of blackface.

In 2024, co-writer Justin Theroux hinted at some upcoming projects he’s excited about but didn’t reveal details. He remarked, “Hollywood just keeps getting funnier with time. It’s incredible how self-absorbed it can be.” He suggested that there are numerous potential themes for future projects, given the various phases and movements in Hollywood over the years.
