Tom Cruise Teases Hilarious Return as Les Grossman After 17 Years – Is a Sequel Coming?
He’s worked in the movie business for over four decades and throughout this time, he’s portrayed several legendary characters. Be it Ethan Hunt from the Mission: Impossible series, a vampire in Interview With the Vampire, or Jerry Maguire in the Oscar-winning film, Cruise has demonstrated his versatility by excelling in various genres beyond action.
2008 saw me gracing the screen in the satirical comedy “Tropic Thunder”. The movie stirred up some controversy, but it also became a massive hit and even earned an Academy Award nomination for Robert Downey Jr. In a recent interview on the podcast “Mission: Impossible”, director Christopher McQuarrie didn’t shy away from discussing anticipated projects like “Top Gun 3”. But what really caught my attention was his confirmation that there have indeed been discussions about me reprising my most humorous role yet: Les Grossman from “Tropic Thunder”.
Recently, Tom Cruise announced that he has additional upcoming projects, despite the Mission: Impossible series concluding. As a co-writer on Top Gun: Maverick, Cruise also confirmed his involvement in future projects. The director hinted at plans for a potential spinoff focusing on the character Les Grossman.
He mentioned that every potential project was important, suggesting they were all equally urgent. However, he clarified that while everything would eventually come to fruition, it might not occur when or where one might expect.
“Everything we’ve been discussing are topics we have thoughts on. The discussions we’ve had regarding Less Grossman are particularly amusing.” When asked if it was genuine, the filmmaker responded, “We’re indeed considering it, buddy. We’re having in-depth conversations about it and deciding on the best approach. Ultimately, it boils down to what that character represents.
The director additionally emphasized that Tom Cruise might play the main character, which comes with increased duties. Throughout their discussion, McQuarrie underscored the significance of the leading role, regardless of whether the audience admires or criticizes it. A secondary character like Les Grossman could make his comments and actions, as he wasn’t saddled with the responsibilities associated with a leading role. Now, he explained that they are brainstorming ways to bring him into focus.
We don’t consciously consider structure as we work; instead, we experiment with different scenes. Having a moment like Tom quietly sitting at a breakfast table, not discussing our film for a while, is incredibly refreshing. Plus, improvising with Tom and working with Les Grossman was one of the most enjoyable aspects of creating this movie.
Could Tropic Thunder Receive a Sequel?
Initially, Tropic Thunder was a hit when it premiered, but over time, it’s become one of those movies that doesn’t hold up as well. Ben Stiller, a comedy genius, directed and co-wrote the script with Justin Theroux and Etan Cohen. The film may have been successful, but it faced criticism for its depiction of intellectual disability and use of blackface.
In 2024, co-writer Justin Theroux hinted at some upcoming projects he’s excited about but didn’t reveal details. He remarked, “Hollywood just keeps getting funnier with time. It’s incredible how self-absorbed it can be.” He suggested that there are numerous potential themes for future projects, given the various phases and movements in Hollywood over the years. If an idea sparks him, he mentioned, “I wouldn’t rule out a sequel.
In 2023, following Cruise’s comment, the actor responded by saying, “It sounds like a affirmative, and we’ll work on deciding the title later.
