After a remarkable 45-year career, Tom Cruise has received his first Oscar. While it was an honorary award rather than one given through competition, the beloved actor appeared deeply moved as he accepted it.
In August, the Academy announced that Tom Cruise, known for his roles in Mission: Impossible and Top Gun, will receive a special Honorary Award. He’ll be honored alongside Dolly Parton, Debbie Allen, and Wynn Thomas.
Academy president Janet Yang told Variety that Tom Cruise’s dedication to filmmaking, the moviegoing experience, and stunt work has been a source of inspiration for everyone.

The actor received an award at the Governors Awards on Sunday, November 16th, from director Alejandro González Iñárritu. The two are set to work together on a new, as-yet-unnamed film next year.
Following a moment of acknowledging the filmmaker, his fellow award recipients, and other attendees, Cruise expressed his gratitude to the Academy’s Board of Governors for the invitation and the honor of being included in the ceremony.

I’m incredibly thankful for this opportunity, and I want to thank everyone who has supported me and helped bring these films to life. This entire process has been a shared journey, and I wouldn’t be here without them.
The actor, reflecting on his passion for movies, explained that they broadened his perspective and sparked his imagination. He said discovering cinema showed him life could be much bigger than he’d previously thought, and that initial inspiration continues to drive him today.
He explained that movies transport him to different cultures, allowing him to understand and value diverse perspectives. They also remind him of our common bonds and how much we all have in common.
It doesn’t matter where we’re from; in that theater, we share laughter, emotions, hope, and dreams – and that’s what makes this art form so powerful. That’s why it’s important, and why it’s important to me personally. Filmmaking isn’t just my job, it’s a core part of who I am.
Tom Cruise has received three Academy Award nominations for his acting, including Best Actor for Born on the Fourth of July and Jerry Maguire, and a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Magnolia. He was also nominated for Best Picture for Top Gun: Maverick as one of its producers.
