Tom Cruise has finally joined a Star Wars movie, but you won’t guess exactly how

Tom Cruise is surprisingly joining the world of Star Wars! Director Shawn Levy recently shared details about the unexpected role the famous actor will play.

Levy is directing the new Star Wars film, Star Wars: Starfighter, which stars Ryan Gosling, Matt Smith, Flynn Gray, Mia Goth, and Amy Adams, along with other actors.

Although Tom Cruise isn’t credited in the movie’s cast, he did visit the set during filming, along with a number of other well-known actors.

Levy shared that while Tom Cruise isn’t in the film, he did contribute to Starfighter by filming a lightsaber battle scene.

So, last week I found out Steven Spielberg was on set, which was insane! And now, Tom Cruise is actually operating the camera himself – I’m a little worried about his shoes, honestly, they’re really nice and he’s getting them dirty!

Okay, so I just read this amazing detail about Tom Cruise arriving on the set of Starfighter! Apparently, he didn’t just show up – he landed in a helicopter one morning in November! And get this – the crew was blasting the Mission: Impossible theme song as he touched down. Seriously, what a way to make an entrance! It sounds like something straight out of one of his movies.

According to Levy, Cruise enthusiastically participated in the action sequence and quickly became completely immersed in the scene, finding himself covered in mud and water as the fight progressed.

The idea began as a joke from Levy – he playfully suggested Tom Cruise film the fight scene himself. Cruise immediately agreed, taking him up on the offer.

Levy described how he bent over his digital camera, clearly focused on getting the perfect picture.

When you watch the movie, you’ll realize some of it was filmed by Tom – isn’t that amazing?

Okay, so not a ton is out about my new movie, Starfighter, yet. But Shawn Levy, the director, mentioned it’s going to tell a story in a similar way to Stranger Things – you know, that show I helped create with the Duffer Brothers. Basically, expect a similar vibe and storytelling style!

Shawn Levy, speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, said that working on Stranger Things taught him it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the pressure of a large franchise. However, he emphasized that focusing on those expectations can lead you astray.

He explained that he’s realized the importance of strong characters, meaningful themes, and believable relationships in storytelling. Like his previous show, Starfighter will feature impressive visuals and a large scope, but it will always prioritize a personal, character-driven story.

Star Wars: Starfighter is scheduled to be released in cinemas on 28 May 2027.
