Tom Cruise Delivers a Win to Netflix With ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning’

Throughout his long career, Tom Cruise has appeared in a wide variety of films, from comedies like Risky Business and Jerry Maguire to dramas such as Born on the Fourth of July and Magnolia. He’s truly tackled every kind of movie role. While he’s proven himself in all genres, his recent work has largely focused on action films. Audiences clearly enjoy seeing him perform daring stunts, and it’s something he clearly enjoys doing himself.

Many of Tom Cruise’s films are best experienced in theaters, where the impressive scale of his stunts can be fully appreciated. However, Netflix viewership numbers show people also enjoy watching his movies at home. In 2025, Cruise released what was thought to be the last Mission: Impossible film, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. Currently, the previous installment, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, is gaining popularity on U.S. Netflix, ranking as the #7 most-watched movie.

You might be wondering why the movie is now called simply Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning instead of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. It seems the title was changed for the home video release, likely because the film didn’t do as well in theaters as expected.

A ‘Mission: Impossible’ by Any Other Name…

Paramount Pictures

As a huge fan of the Mission: Impossible films, I was really excited for Dead Reckoning. The last one, Fallout, was a massive hit – seriously, critics loved it with a 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and it made almost $800 million worldwide. Each movie had been upping the ante, so it felt like this series could just keep getting bigger and better. While Dead Reckoning Part One got some good buzz from critics, it didn’t perform as well at the box office as Fallout, making about $200 million less. It’s a bit of a disappointment considering how well the previous film did, especially in a world still recovering from the pandemic’s impact on moviegoing.

Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie have explained the title change from Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two to Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning by saying each film works well on its own. However, some industry experts believe Paramount changed the title because they were worried the second film wouldn’t perform as well as the first. The new title might have helped, as The Final Reckoning earned $20 million more at the box office than the previous installment, although critics weren’t as impressed.

As a big Tom Cruise fan, I remember when Edge of Tomorrow came out and how catchy the tagline “Live. Die. Repeat.” was. It was so popular, in fact, that when it came out on DVD and Blu-ray, they really pushed that phrase. A lot of us fans thought it was done on purpose – maybe to make the title more memorable, or even to separate it from the original Edge of Tomorrow title, which didn’t exactly blow up at the box office. I even saw some online stores listing it as Live Die Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow – it was like they were officially changing the name!

Don’t Plan on a Cruise Marathon With Netflix

Despite starring in many films of all types, currently the only Tom Cruise movie available on U.S. Netflix is Dead Reckoning. If you’re disappointed you won’t be able to watch the other Mission: Impossible movies after finishing it, we suggest just enjoying the best stunt from Dead Reckoning in the video above – it’s a great way to end your viewing experience.
