As a long-time fan of the Mission: Impossible franchise, I must say I’ve seen my fair share of action, suspense, and Tom Cruise defying gravity. The news about Mission Impossible 8 being delayed until 2025 was a bit of a blow, but hey, at least we’ll get to see it in IMAX!

He’s normally front and centre of dramatic stunts in his biggest roles.

But even Tom Cruise showed that even he can get spooked by some of his biggest roles, as he prepared to film daredevil plane scenes for Mission Impossible 8 in Oxfordshire on Sunday.

In readiness for flying, the 62-year-old actor ascended into the control cabin of a vintage biplane from the 20th century.

In the role of Ethan Hunt, the renowned actor, footage was captured with him leaping skyward on a plane, marking his contribution to the nail-biting climax of the eighth installment of the Mission Impossible series.

In 1994, Tom, the owner of multiple airplanes and a licensed pilot, donned Ethan’s iconic leather jacket before leaping aboard his plane.

Previously, the star was shooting sequences for the much-anticipated Mission Impossible 8 at Longcross Studios.

Back in April, Tom was last seen filming just a stone’s throw from Downing Street in London.

Dramatic scenes signalled trouble for the Impossible Missions Force agent Ethan Hunt as the actor was seen kneeling on the road in surrender.

Scenes were filmed in various locations like Derbyshire, Surrey, as well as central London. Some of these iconic spots include the Natural History Museum in Kensington and Westminster Bridge.

Filming for the eighth installment of the Mission Impossible series in the UK occurred from March through December, 2022.

The production of the eighth movie was temporarily paused for the cast to publicize Part One, and later, a strike led to more postponements.

Production restarted soon after, but was suspended in July due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Back in March 2024, I jumped back into the filming process, but unfortunately, we had to pause production again in May, apparently because of an issue with our trusty camera tool known as a gimbal. However, we’re up and running once more!

Originally, it was planned for Mission Impossible 8 to be shot simultaneously with Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, the latter of which grossed more than half a billion dollars at the box office.

Due to the strikes, Mission Impossible 8 was delayed; it was initially intended to be shown to audiences by the end of summer, but its release has now been moved to May 23, 2025.

Apart from Tom, the upcoming eighth Mission Impossible movie is set to bring back Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, and Vanessa Kirby as well.

It is anticipated that the actor won’t find it necessary to plead with studio executives to prolong the movie’s screening this time.

As the seventh movie graced our cinema screens, I found myself grappling with the potential for Oppenheimer to eclipse the film’s impact, given that it too demanded a restricted number of screens for its release.

In contrast to past movies in the series, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One didn’t meet expectations at the ticket counter, even with Tom’s efforts aimed at prolonging its success.

It turned out he was correct, as Oppenheimer earned approximately $400 million more than Mission: Impossible at the box office.

The Mission: Impossible movie franchise kicked off in 1996, drawing inspiration from a TV show with the same title that first aired in 1966.
