It came as a complete surprise to everyone: a new Lord of the Rings sequel is being made! But the biggest news isn’t just that there’s a sequel – it’s who is involved. Comedy star Stephen Colbert, known for his work on The Late Show, is co-writing the script. And, after years of fan requests, the beloved character Tom Bombadil will finally appear in a Lord of the Rings movie directed by Peter Jackson. Let’s say it again: Stephen Colbert is co-writing a script that includes Tom Bombadil!
According to Variety, here’s what we know about the upcoming Lord of the Rings project. While Tom Bombadil isn’t specifically named, the six chapters the movie will adapt heavily feature his story.
Fourteen years after Frodo’s death, Sam, Merry, and Pippin revisit the places where their great adventure first started. At the same time, Sam’s daughter, Elanor, uncovers an old secret and begins to investigate a hidden threat that almost caused the War of the Ring to fail before it could even begin.
Stephen Colbert and Peter Jackson surprised fans on March 25th – Tolkien Reading Day, a global event encouraging everyone to explore J.R.R. Tolkien’s works – with a discussion about their upcoming movie, The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past. The film is currently in the early stages of pre-production.
In the video, the director, who previously hosted The Colbert Report, revealed that the decision to leave out Tom Bombadil was a major reason for how the movie turned out.
Who Tom Bombadil Is & Why He Was Absent From the Original ‘Lord of the Rings’ Franchise

As a huge Tolkien fan myself, I was so excited to hear Stephen Colbert talk about the new film! He explained it’s going to cover six chapters that were actually in the original ‘Fellowship of the Ring’ book, but had to be cut from the movie back in 2001. He’s clearly a dedicated fan, and he’s been really fascinated by these lost chapters – especially one called ‘Fog on the Barrow-downs,’ which is where we meet Tom Bombadil. Apparently, they were cut just because the movie was already too long, but so many of us have always loved those parts and are thrilled they’re finally getting their due!
I noticed that the first six chapters of ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ – specifically from ‘Three Is Company’ through ‘Fog on the Barrow-downs’ – weren’t included in the first movie. It struck me that those chapters could work as a standalone story that connects to the larger narrative. I wondered if we could create something that stays true to both the original book and the movies you’ve already made.
Tom Bombadil is a mysterious character in Tolkien’s world because he isn’t affected by the One Ring. He appears in three chapters – “The Old Forest,” where he meets Frodo, Merry, Pippin, and Sam; “In the House of Tom Bombadil,” where the hobbits visit his home; and “Fog on the Barrow-Downs,” where he helps them continue their journey, providing them with weapons for protection. During these chapters, Frodo briefly considers leaving his companions, creating a key emotional moment in the story. However, this isn’t the only time this character, also known as “The Master” and “The Eldest,” appears throughout Tolkien’s writings.
What Makes Tom Bombadil So Important to ‘Lord of the Rings’ Fans?

I’ve always been fascinated by Tom Bombadil! It’s incredible to me that Tolkien first imagined him before even the world of The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit. He actually wrote notes and a poem about Tom – which came out in Oxford Magazine way back in the early 1930s, a few years before The Hobbit was even published! It wasn’t until decades later, in 1962, that a whole book dedicated to him finally appeared. And what’s really interesting is that scholars believe he doesn’t quite fit anywhere within the usual categories of characters in Tolkien’s world – he’s truly unique and wonderfully mysterious.
Tom Bombadil has actually appeared onscreen before, though the upcoming Jackson-Colbert project will be his first time in a movie – specifically, a film directed by Jackson. The character, played by Rory Kinnear, was first introduced in Season 2 of Amazon Prime’s Lord of the Rings spin-off series. Peter Jackson chose not to include Bombadil in the original film trilogy because he felt the character wasn’t essential to the main story and would have slowed down the pace.
Following the movie The Hunt for Gollum, a new collaboration between Stephen Colbert and Andy Jackson is planned. Andy Serkis, who famously played Gollum in the original Lord of the Rings films, will direct and once again play the character in this upcoming project.
