Today host Jenna Bush Hager reveals she's giving up 'numbing' habit so she can be a better mother

As a dedicated follower of the Bush family and a mother myself, I find Jenna Bush Hager‘s decision to delete Instagram from her phone both inspiring and relatable. Like many of us, she struggles with finding the right balance between technology and family life. Her sister Barbara’s experience resonates deeply as I too have found myself getting lost in the digital world, forgetting to truly enjoy the present moments with my own children.

Jenna Bush Hager confessed that Instagram can be hard to resist, and she plans to remove the social media platform from her phone so she can focus more on being a hands-on mom to her three little ones.

On yesterday’s episode of Today with Hoda & Jenna, a 42-year-old individual disclosed her intention to emulate her twin sister, Barbara Pierce Bush, who has recently deleted Instagram from her phone and hasn’t felt its absence since.

Jenna and her fellow host, Hoda Kotb, delved into popular wellness topics and the concept of adapting to circumstances as they arose. In this conversation, the mother of three admitted to excessively using her phone at times, something she finds challenging to manage effectively.

She shared with Hoda, who’s 60, that there’s something which seems to pull her focus away, possibly affecting others too, from achieving a state of flow. I suspect you can figure out what it is, she added, as they both simultaneously said, “Distraction by gazing!”

As a die-hard fan, I couldn’t help but confess: “Caught in its grip, there are times when I sense an unease, and if I’m truly honest with my feelings, it’s often because I’ve been overindulging on…,” to which Hoda sympathized, “I must admit, I’ve found myself doing the same thing quite a bit recently.”

Jenna exclaimed, “I’m detaching!” Then, she explained, “Whenever I sense I’ve lost my rhythm, I remove Instagram from my phone. My sister hasn’t actually stopped using Instagram, but she’s made it absent from her phone.”

Previously, the eldest child of a former president confessed: “I must take this action to be freed from it… Someone else needs to reset my password for me as it’s hard to resist,” later mentioning her brother again.

She removes it from her phone and exclaims, “I haven’t kept it in my pocket for a while now, and it feels great to be a responsive mother. It seems like more positive moments, like bumping into friends or experiencing joyful events, are just happening to me.”

Jenna affirmed, saying, “I won’t miss a thing since everything it provided took away from my happiness instead, hence I’ll remove it today.”

As a busy mom of two, I too have adopted a strategy of going with the flow more, particularly on my way home after a long day at work. This approach helps me navigate the unexpected challenges and embrace the tranquility that comes with an unstructured end to my day.

She shared that she strolled home via Central Park, taking intentional strides. Instead of hurrying to a destination, she deliberately paced herself, moving at a leisurely pace, almost like counting each step: “one step, another step, yet another step,” she clarified.

Having spent years rushing through life, always chasing the next deadline or goal, I decided to try something different on my way home one evening. With a new book about slow walking in hand, I deliberately took my time, savoring each step as if it were a precious gem. The transformation was almost magical – instead of feeling like I’d arrived at home in a blink of an eye, I savored every moment of the journey, taking in the sights and sounds around me that I had never noticed before. It was a refreshing change from my usual hurried pace, and I felt rejuvenated by this simple shift in perspective. I encourage everyone to take a slow walk home at least once – it might just change your life!

Jenna said: “If you had been paying attention, like we usually do by either watching or listening to a podcast or music, then you would have been ‘in the zone’, otherwise, you wouldn’t have.”

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I recently find myself beaming with delight, having just learned that my dear friend Barbara has become a mother for the second time, making me an overjoyed auntie once more. This news comes hot on the heels of my heartfelt Instagram post expressing my elation at this wonderful turn of events.

She wrote on her post, ‘My sister gave birth to a tiny boy, and I’ve fallen head over heels for Edward Finn!’. The post included an adorable photo of Jenna holding the newborn as she fed him with a bottle.

In the series of images that followed, I found myself posed alongside the sisters, each snap capturing our united presence. There was also an intimate shot focusing on Edward, gently wrapped in a striped shawl, revealing his expressive features up close.

Barbara and her spouse Craig Coyne have a daughter named Cora together, whereas Jenna is married to Henry Hager and they share three kids: Mila (age 11), Poppy (9 years old), and their 5-year-old son Hal.
