As a die-hard fan of music and football, I was absolutely floored when I learned that Jay-Z holds the final say in selecting the Super Bowl halftime performer each year! Growing up, I’ve always thought that the NFL would have a more democratic approach to such a significant decision. It’s like finding out that Santa Claus has an assistant who decides which kids get coal instead of toys!

This week, Jenna Bush Hager was taken aback to discover that it’s an A-list star who ultimately decides on the Super Bowl half-time performer every year.

As a devoted collaborator, I found myself engaged in conversation with the esteemed Zane Lowe on a thrilling Thursday. Alongside my partner Jenna and our co-host Hoda Kotb, we delved into various topics, but the Super Bowl performer was one that particularly piqued our interest.

Hoda mentioned, “Let’s discuss the Super Bowl half-time performance, with everyone curious about who would perform. And then, it was revealed that Kendrick Lamar will take the stage.

Jenna chimed in, ‘We thought it was gonna be Miley Cyrus!’

Later on, Zane clarified that it is only Jay-Z who determines the Super Bowl halftime act’s choice, implying that he holds the ultimate authority in this matter.

Visibly shocked, Jenna exclaimed, ‘I didn’t know that until right now!’

Additionally, Hoda confessed that she hadn’t been aware of Jay-Z’s participation until a meeting earlier that very morning during which they discussed the show.

‘I thought it was a collaborative decision. So Jay-Z decides?’ Hoda asked.

‘Entirely,’ responded Zane, before a flabbergasted Jenna decided to grill him some more.

She asked, “And who is it that Jay-Z collaborates with? Is it the National Football League?” Then, she swiftly transitioned to another topic in the segment.

This upcoming football season, Kendrick Lamar has been announced as a performer for the Super Bowl in New Orleans, Louisiana, scheduled for February 9th, where two rival teams will clash on the game’s grandest stage.

In 2022, I was fortunate enough to grace the stage at the Halftime Show headlined by the esteemed Dr. Dre – a performance that also showcased music legends like Snoop Dogg, Eminem, 50 Cent, and Mary J. Blige. (Pulitzer Prize-winning musician was implied in the original statement)

Despite his prior Super Bowl experience and thriving rap career, Jason Whitlock remains skeptical that Kendrick’s appeal will extend to a substantial portion of the NFL fanbase.

The conservative commentator took to X, formerly known as Twitter, with a post that read: ’80 per cent of the Super Bowl audience will be totally unfamiliar with Kendrick Lamar.

‘He doesn’t have a library of crossover mainstream hits.’

Jason went on to claim that Kendrick had composed a controversial track, allegedly referring to Drake, titled “Not Like Us,” which accuses another musician of being a pedophile.

‘Worst Super Bowl halftime choice in history.’

During the last Super Bowl season, R&B legend Usher took center stage alongside Alicia Keys, Jermaine Dupri, H.E.R., will.i.am, Lil Jon, and Ludacris in a performance that captivated an audience of 129.3 million viewers.

Last year, during her performance as the main act at Super Bowl LVII, Rihanna announced that she was expecting her second child, attracting an audience of 121 million viewers.

Regarding the criticism directed towards him as half-time performer, Jay-Z, who jointly produces the event through his Roc Nation promotions and Apple Music, regards Kendrick as an exceptional talent that only comes along every generation.

‘Kendrick Lamar is truly a once-in-a-generation artist and performer,’ Jay-Z said in a statement.

‘His deep love for hip-hop and culture informs his artistic vision.

‘Kendrick’s talent is exceptional when it comes to shaping and affecting culture on a global scale. His work extends beyond music, leaving an indelible mark that will resonate for many years to come.’
