The clip, which recently resurfaced and has since gone viral, left me utterly speechless. I couldn’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for Amy Reiley, the culinary journalist who was grilled about her book co-author’s ongoing murder trial.
Recently, a past video clip from Hoda Kotb’s morning show interview in 2010 resurfaced and caused quite a stir among viewers. One individual characterized her questioning during that interview as remarkably unusual or extraordinary.
On August 9, as Hoda marked her 60th birthday with her loved ones, she conducted an interview with culinary journalist Amy Reiley regarding her book “The Love Diet,” alongside co-host Kathie Lee Gifford. During the conversation, Hoda posed a surprising question.
Instead of asking about the subject matter of Amy’s book, Hoda chose to directly delve into questioning Amy about Juan-Carlos Cruz, her co-author, who was then under scrutiny due to allegations of a murder-for-hire scheme against his wife, Jennifer Campbell.
Instead of beating around the bush, Hoda directly addressed the matter by saying: ‘Let’s clear up some business before we proceed. There’s a co-author named Juan-Carlos Cruz who is involved in a murder for hire case with his wife. Today marks a plea bargain hearing; can you give us an update on the current status of this case?’
Amy seemed slightly surprised by Hoda’s direct question, but responded coolly: “Well, there’s a hearing coming up in a few hours, and it’s rumored that a plea bargain will be made. Honestly, that’s about all the information I have.”
Amy went on to say, “I’ve been corresponding with Juan-Carlos through letters. Unfortunately, he can’t discuss his situation with me verbally.”

On Sunday, the video was shared on X, accompanied by the caption, “You wouldn’t be able to guess the initial inquiry about this book even after a thousand attempts,” and it has garnered over 1.3 million views since then.
Several individuals responded swiftly to the post, with some criticizing Hoda’s straightforward approach during the interview, such as one commenter who stated, “This isn’t the best start for that segment…”. Another individual expressed sympathy for the woman involved, saying, “I truly feel for her in this situation.”
A third person claimed: ‘Oh boy, Hoda did her so dirty there!’ while a fourth X user said: ‘What the actual f*** who opens a conversation like that.’
“Someone remarked that Hoda is extremely eccentric, ‘oh my goodness!’ Another individual found it both amusing and disturbing, describing it as ‘funny yet frightening.'”
One individual humorously remarked, ‘Hoda was present for TEA, and that’s all,’ whereas the other implied, ‘It seems as though they detained her here specifically to inquire about the ongoing court case involving her collaborator.’
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I must say, I was utterly astounded. This experience left me momentarily at a loss for words, much like the person who exclaimed, “Incredible” with a tone of pure amazement, or the one who found themselves unable to utter a single word after witnessing it.
On December 13, 2010, Juan-Carlos was imprisoned for a term of nine years due to attempting to contract the services of two homeless individuals to carry out a murder on his wife.
At one point, the Calorie Commando, also known as the chef, did not dispute allegations that he planned to hire individuals for the purpose of killing his lawyer wife, Jennifer, by means of strangulation.
He gave them $500 apiece and provided them with information about her whereabouts in the Los Angeles region.
The plan went wrong when the prospective killers went to the police.
Later on, Juan-Carlos, who hosted a show on the Food Network channel, was covertly videotaped by individuals. They proposed monetary compensation for their involvement in an illicit act.
