To the TV shows and actors that didn’t get an Emmy nomination: I salute you

In the spirit of camaraderie, I’d like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all the Emmy nominees of 2025. It’s quite likely that I’ve penned compliments for many of you, and rest assured, I’ve never uttered a negative word about any of you. For those who may not have crossed my path, it was merely a matter of limited time and space to acknowledge everyone and everything. Please take no offense from this omission. Regardless of the eventual winner, I will rejoice wholeheartedly, for while I believe that creative accolades are somewhat superfluous, the thrill of victory is undeniable and brings tangible rewards. Each one of you has achieved something in your career deserving of recognition.

To those who weren’t chosen for an Emmy nomination, the countless creators and producers in the television industry, it’s worth noting that the absence of formal recognition doesn’t hold much significance. The age-old phrase “qui est in, qui est out” from Serge Gainsbourg’s song might apply here, suggesting that the nominations only represent a limited perspective. In fact, the 2025 nominees, with some exceptions, hail primarily from a small number of shows, many reappearing annually, reflecting a pattern that repeats each year. This leads one to infer that the voters may not be viewing a wide variety of television content at all.

Commentary: Why the Emmys still matter in a time of turmoil

As a film enthusiast, I pen my thoughts thusly: The moment we cease debating and appreciating artistry is when I fear the victors of mediocrity have triumphed.

It’s important to note that not every Academy voter follows this pattern, but what we can ultimately determine is only who was nominated, not who could have been nominated if a few votes had changed, or who, despite not being close to nomination, still had supporters among the voters.

I’ve expressed my appreciation for numerous actors and shows, but it’s rare for series to gain recognition because they may not fit the right genre, air on the wrong network, lack buzz, seem too obscure or unusual, or have no budget for campaigning. It’s also true that voters in various elections can sometimes be uninspired in their selections, and we’ve all been there at one point.

Awards

Columnist Glenn Whipp analyzes the list of nominees for this year’s Emmys, discussing who has been left out, who made the cut, and who should have been included based on Tuesday’s announcements.

As we journey towards the TV ceremony on September 14 (airing on CBS), it’s important to recognize that nearly everyone in each category will go home without an Emmy. I tip my hat to those who didn’t get nominated. Creating a show may be tough, and while talent can vary, nobody aims to produce poor quality television. Maybe I didn’t adore your program, but I appreciate the dedication behind it. And let’s be honest, I’m not so arrogant as to think I could do any better. This isn’t mere praise; every show has its supporters, and the diverse mix of high, mid, and low-profile programming is what makes television such a beloved friend to many. Less glamorous TV, devoid of big stars, can be just as thrilling and innovative as the predicted winners, if not more so.

Awards are beside the point.
