To speak or not to speak: Grogu’s first words shouldn’t be rushed

To speak or not to speak: Grogu's first words shouldn't be rushed

As a seasoned gamer and Star Wars enthusiast who has spent countless hours navigating the galaxy far, far away, I can confidently say that Grogu is undeniably one of the most expressive characters in the franchise. The puppeteers and directors behind The Mandalorian have truly outdone themselves with this adorable little creature.

In a simplified manner: Grogu from Star Wars stands out as the most expressive character, thanks to the skillful puppeteers and directors who work on him and The Mandalorian. Although Season 3 hinted at Grogu’s initial words, it doesn’t necessarily mean he has to speak in the upcoming Mando movie, The Mandalorian & Grogu.

According to ScreenRant, there might be a storyline in the upcoming movie revolving around Grogu learning to talk, but some fans worry that this could overshadow the main plot and diminish Grogu’s charm. However, it’s premature to assume that Grogu will suddenly start speaking fluently in the film. While it’s possible that the movie might end with Grogu saying his first word, I don’t think directors Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni plan to develop this skill beyond that point. They recognize Grogu’s appeal without any dialogue, so they likely won’t change something that works well as it is.

To speak or not to speak: Grogu's first words shouldn't be rushed

From a dedicated fan’s perspective, it’s fascinating to witness Grogu’s character growth. Despite being mute, Grogu conveys emotions so profoundly that dialogue isn’t necessary for his development. His expressive face speaks volumes, reflecting the skill of the talented crew working behind the scenes.

Although Grogu hasn’t been verbose throughout the series, fans have eagerly anticipated the moment when they hear him address Din Djarin as “Dad” or a similar term for “father.” This significant moment will undoubtedly be gratifying for both the audience and Din, as it marks the first time Grogu acknowledges his only familial figure and parental role model. The upcoming season of The Mandalorian has hinted at Grogu communicating in a simple yet meaningful manner, using single syllables like “No,” “Yes,” or “Da.” This approach allows for his character growth while maintaining the charm that made him endearing to viewers.

Grogu, similar to how we saw in ‘Mando Season 3’, can distinguish between ‘yes’ and ‘no’. This ability is possibly hinting at more communication skills in the future, as depicted in ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu‘. Since Grogu belongs to the Yoda species and might be as old, or older, than the famous Jedi Master, he has a lot of time to develop his language. As such, it’s reasonable to assume that the creators won’t push him to speak full sentences immediately; a limited vocabulary should suffice.

In simpler terms, Jon Favreau may choose to proceed at a leisurely pace, as suggested in his interviews during the Season 3 promotions, implying no sudden change in his speaking style. As for Grogu’s ability to speak affecting his “cute” image, it could become an issue if he starts speaking too fluently and relies excessively on speech. However, if he speaks occasionally, like saying a word or two and addressing Din as “Dada,” it will only enhance his cuteness.

The Mandalorian is streaming on Disney+ and The Mandalorian & Grogu premieres May 22, 2026.
