Timothy Spall’s best BBC shows for fans that have already binge-watched Death Valley
Timothy Spall returns to British television with the highly acclaimed and record-breaking murder mystery series titled “Death Valley“.
In this production, the leading actor portrays John Chapel, a former thespian who once embodied a fictitious television detective, as he teams up with Detective Janie Mallowan (played by Gwyneth Keyworth) to unravel mysteries in a Welsh hamlet.
Regardless of their unusual pairing, they soon discover that they serve as each other’s most trusted companions, unknowingly assisting one another in leaving their past behind.
What to Read Next
Death Valley has gained significant popularity among viewers, attracting an impressive 2.9 million spectators – marking the largest overnight viewership for a freshly debuted BBC scripted comedy in the past five years. Moreover, its series premiere held the top position across all terrestrial television channels.
If you’ve finished watching all that Spall has offered so far and are eager for more, here is a collection of some standout BBC series he starred in.
Wolf Hall
The critically-acclaimed drama is derived from the popular book series penned by the deceased author Hilary Mantel. It chronicles the life story of Thomas Cromwell, portrayed by Mark Rylance, and his ascent in the Tudor court under King Henry VIII, played by Damian Lewis.
Last year marked the beginning of the second season for the series “The Mirror and the Light.” In this new installment, Timothy Spall took on the role previously played by Bernard Hill (who passed away in 2024). At that time, executive producer Peter Kosminsky stated that the character had evolved differently from how he appears in the original second book, but Spall’s portrayal was a perfect fit.
The show boasts actors like Jonathan Pryce from “Slow Horses”, Thomas Brodie-Sangster known for “The Queen’s Gambit”, Harriet Walter of “Succession”, and Claire Foy who has graced “The Crown”.
Or, more concisely:
Jonathan Pryce (from Slow Horses), Thomas Brodie-Sangster (The Queen’s Gambit), Harriet Walter (Succession), and Claire Foy (The Crown) are among the stars in this show.
The Sixth Commandment
In an impressive turn of events, Spall garnered significant recognition, even earning a BAFTA prize for Best Leading Actor, due to his outstanding portrayal in Sarah Phelps’ production titled “The Sixth Commandment“.
In simpler terms, the 2023 four-part series narrates the real events surrounding the murder of teacher Peter Farquhar (played by Spall) at the hands of Ben Field (portrayed by Éanna Hardwicke). This villain cleverly infiltrates not only Peter’s life but also that of his neighbor Ann Moore-Martin (Anne Reid). Actresses Annabel Scholey from “Being Human” and Sheila Hancock are also part of this series.
Back when I was diving into this captivating series, it struck me deeply that it’s all about the bittersweet blend of solitude and affection, and the realization that the dreams we yearn for might just be too perfect to be real. (As I read in Radio Times)
The Street
The TV show “BBC One” aired over three seasons spanning from 2006 to 2009, focusing on the daily lives of various residents living on a street in Manchester.
The series hails from the creative mind of Jimmy McGovern, and it features Spall as Eddie McEvoy. Alongside his wife Margie, played by Ger Ryan, they are the sole family that spans various seasons in this show.
Despite having a brief run, the series garnered significant critical praise, earning two BAFTAs and four International Emmys. Among its distinguished cast were stars such as Jim Broadbent, who won an Oscar, Jane Horrocks from Absolutely Fabulous, Stephen Graham known for Adolescence, and David Thewlis, famous for Landscapers.
The Syndicate
In the debut of Kay Mellor’s collection series, Spall was featured. This show chronicles various lottery-winning betting syndicates in each season.
In the given episodes, the actor portrays Bob Davies alongside Lorraine Bruce from “Vera,” Matthew Lewis known for his role in “Harry Potter,” and Joanna Page, famously recognized from “Gavin & Stacey.” The first season of 2012 emphasizes the lives of supermarket employees whose world gets flipped around.
In the following seasons of the program, we see actors such as Siobhan Finneran from “Happy Valley,” Alison Steadman from “Gavin & Stacey,” comedian Lenny Henry, and Taj Atwal from “Line of Duty” appear. The character Denise Simpson played by Bruce is the only one who remains constant throughout all seasons.
Death Valley, a series, airs every Sunday on BBC One. You can catch up with the entire series right now on BBC iPlayer.
