Timothy Spall’s BBC crime series branded ‘Midsomer Murders with jokes’ finally confirms return date

The TV show Death Valley is coming back, and now we know when the new season will air. Timothy Spall will once again play John Chapel, a former actor, and Gwyneth Keyworth is returning as detective Janie Mallowan.

The first season was popular when it launched last year on BBC One and iPlayer. Critics at The Guardian compared it to Midsomer Murders, but noted it had a comedic edge.

Okay, awesome news for anyone waiting – we finally have a release date for season two! It’s dropping on Sunday, May 17th at 8:15 PM on BBC One. Plus, they’ve given us a sneak peek with some first-look images, which is super exciting!

If you prefer to watch all the episodes at once, the complete second season of Death Valley will be available on BBC iPlayer all at once, starting on the same day.

Season two begins a few months after the first season ended. Janie has been promoted to Detective Inspector, but she’s overwhelmed with work and struggling to keep up with the growing pile of paperwork.

What to Read Next

Things get even more complicated when Janie discovers her boyfriend, John, has been dating her mother, leading her to avoid him. The situation escalates after a murder occurs during a Community Payback assignment, and DCI Barry Clarke insists Janie enlist John as a consultant for the police department.

Okay, so in series two, things get really interesting! John’s pulled back into acting – can you believe it? – filming this huge fantasy show in Wales. But of course, it’s not all fun and games, because a murder happens and he and the team have to investigate. I’m really curious to see if getting back into acting will somehow rekindle an old passion for him – like, will it bring something back to life that he’d forgotten?

No matter if they’re solving a murder in a quiet seaside town, an eco-friendly community, or the intense world of rugby, John and Janie are dedicated to upholding justice in mid-Wales.

Season two will feature several guest stars, including Jane Horrocks, Hammed Animashaun, Alexandra Roach, Roisin Conaty, and Mark Lewis Jones.

The cast also includes Jim Howick, Owen Teale, Asim Chaudhry, Lynn Hunter, Rhiannon Clements, Mike Bubbins, and Liz Carr.

The second season of Death Valley starts on BBC One at 8:15 PM on May 17th. You can also watch all episodes of the new season at once on BBC iPlayer, starting the same day.

Season one is available to stream now on BBC iPlayer.

The latest issue of Living Legends, a beautifully illustrated 100-page tribute to Sir David Attenborough, is now available! You can purchase it at newsstands or online.
