The criticism of Timothée Chalamet’s comment that ‘nobody cares’ about opera and ballet continued on Monday, with the game show Jeopardy! poking fun at him during a recent episode.
The 30-year-old actor, who was nominated for an Oscar, caused a lot of controversy in the arts world. Even a game show got involved, poking fun at him with a category called ‘Ballet and Opera‘.
The show’s Instagram posted a video of contestants getting all the questions right, jokingly shading Timothée Chalamet with the caption, ‘NOBODY @HIM [side-eye emoji] #timotheechalamet.’
People quickly started making fun of the situation, and one person pointed out that even the game show Jeopardy! was subtly criticizing it.
Someone else pointed out that the best part was how it clearly disproved his point, since everyone managed to answer at least one question.
‘Dying art ehh???? They flew through those answers!!!!!!!’ someone else chimed in.
‘What is: shadeeeeeee,’ another fan quipped.
‘Jeopardy to the arts: I got your back.’
‘I’ll take petty for $1000.’
Timothée Chalamet faced criticism for comments suggesting he has no interest in pursuing ballet or opera, stating that those art forms don’t appeal to a broad audience.
In a recent interview with Variety, Kylie Jenner’s boyfriend confessed to Matthew McConaughey that he prefers careers that don’t require constant maintenance or attention.
He explained that he and others have often discussed on talk shows the importance of supporting movie theaters and the film genre itself.
Honestly, I just know people are going to flock to see things like Barbie and Oppenheimer, and they’re not going to be shy about it! They’ll be shouting from the rooftops how much they loved it, and I’m already living for it. It’s going to be amazing to see everyone so excited!
I’m not interested in jobs where I’d be struggling to keep something traditional going, especially if it feels like nobody really appreciates it anymore. Things like ballet or opera, for example.
I have all the respect for ballet and opera fans, but my recent broadcast lost viewers – about 14 cents worth, actually – and it feels like a pointless setback.
It wasn’t the first time Chalamet made the claim.
Recently discovered video from 2019 shows Timothée Chalamet making a comparable statement during an appearance for his movie, The King. He told the audience he believed opera and ballet were ‘fading away.’
Okay, so Whoopi Goldberg finally talked about it on The View today, and honestly, it was everything. She was so right! She said, and I’m paraphrasing because her words were just perfect, that it really hurts when someone just trash-talks another artist’s work. Like, it just doesn’t feel good to watch someone disrespect something someone else poured their heart into. It really resonated with me, because, seriously, don’t mess with people’s art!
You probably didn’t even realize you were in a difficult situation until you admitted it, and then you made it worse by saying the problem was only 14 cents. People will be much more upset than that, though – it won’t be about such a small amount.
‘So be careful,’ she said, adding, ‘I’m just saying. Be careful, boy.’
Others, including Doja Cat and Jamie Lee Curtis, have slammed him for his comments as well.
His statement drew criticism online from people in both the ballet and opera worlds, including organizations like New York City’s Metropolitan Opera, London’s Royal Ballet and Opera, and opera singer Isabel Leonard.
Isabel was surprised that someone who appears so accomplished could be so awkward and limited in their opinions on art, especially since they consider themselves an artist – something she’d expect more from an actor.
Honestly, in this interview, what really stood out to me wasn’t what he said, but how he spoke about other artists. Making dismissive or critical comments about your peers? That tells you everything you need to know about a person’s character, and it wasn’t a good look. It really reveals who someone is underneath it all.
As someone who’s spent years immersed in creativity, I’ve always believed you don’t need to love everything artistic. That’s perfectly okay! But what really strikes me as a sign of insecurity – whether in an artist or simply someone offering an opinion – is the need to put down art that does resonate with others. Truly strong people celebrate what inspires, especially those things that encourage a little slowing down and mindful appreciation. It’s about lifting up, not tearing down.
As a lifelong lover of the performing arts, I couldn’t agree more with Deepa Johnny’s comment! It really struck a chord with me when she said there’s just nothing like the magic you experience at a live theatre performance, ballet, or opera. It’s truly something special.
Okay, so Timothée is totally dominating awards season right now! I’m obsessed with ‘Marty Supreme,’ obviously, and it’s incredible that he not only got nominated for Best Actor, but he’s also up for Best Picture as a producer! Seriously, he’s just… everything. I’m already planning my acceptance speech for him!
Even though he’s been in the news for some controversial statements, he still has a good chance of winning. His comments received a lot of attention this week, but voting for the Oscars ended on March 5th, so it probably won’t affect the outcome.
Timothée Chalamet will have a tough time winning Best Actor. He’s competing against Michael B. Jordan for his role in ‘Sinners,’ Leonardo DiCaprio in ‘One Battle After Another,’ Wagner Moura in ‘The Secret Agent,’ and Ethan Hawke in ‘Blue Moon’.
