Timothée Chalamet hosts ‘SNL’ and puts on his Bob Dylan impression as musical guest

During his third appearance as the host of “Saturday Night Live”, Timothée Chalamet showed once more that he’s ready to take on whatever challenges “SNL” presents… occasionally at a cost to himself.

This week, Timothée Chalamet, who received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for playing Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown,” also served as the musical guest. During this role, he sang a few Dylan tunes. The songs selected were “Outlaw Blues,” “Three Angels,” and “Tomorrow is a Long Time.” In his monologue, the host mentioned these tracks as among his favorites. Accompanying him on keyboard was James Blake.

Despite the fact that “SNL” is notoriously challenging acoustically, even for seasoned musicians, it was hard not to hope Timothée Chalamet would succeed. However, his musical showcases seemed more like a karaoke night at Studio 8H, with his voice sounding thin and shaky on occasion. But remember, Oscar nominations can’t be retracted (unless perhaps in rare instances).

Television

The long-running comedy series marks its 50th season by releasing two documentaries and a future primetime special, looking back on its role as a significant part of American culture.

This week, Lin Manuel-Miranda unexpectedly took on the role of Alexander Hamilton during the cold open. Additional highlights included Timothée Chalamet‘s lively performances in several sketches that generally held up well, a significant improvement compared to last week when there were fewer sketches overall.

Timothée Chalamet portrayed various roles: a tough fitness instructor in an energy-light bungee exercise skit, an artificially intelligent robot in a classroom sketch about watching AI-produced videos, a doctor who resuscitated a dying woman with a potent fart, a deity in an animated piece, and a dog amidst a bustling dog park. A separate sketch, not involving Chalamet, presented a satirical commercial for “Oedipal Arrangements,” advocating for escalating one’s bond with their mother to new heights.

Additionally, a commercial by T-Mobile resembling a comedy skit showcased Kenan Thompson and Marcello Hernández crooning about the benefits of swift mobile internet connectivity.

In this week’s opening scene, the stage was set for a founding fathers rap battle with Lin-Manuel Miranda as Hamilton entering amidst grand applause. However, as Miranda prepared to launch into a verse about America never having a king, President Trump (played by James Austin Johnson) interrupted and froze him with a retort, “Never say never… I’m in my king era.” Trump then recounted some achievements from his first week in office, including eliminating DEI programs, socializing with tech moguls such as Zuckerberg, Bezos, Cook, and Musk, and claimed that he likes Musk but shares the sentiment of Musk’s children who don’t want him around. Trump also emphasized traditional gender roles (“Two genders, one to work and one to cook.”) and complimented his cabinet, albeit with a disclaimer that most of them were not exceptional. Nevertheless, Trump took pleasure in teasing Miranda, who was unable to move or speak. “Look at Lin, look at how much he wants to rap… Lindy, Lindy, Lindy, Lindy… Lin-Manuel Miranda Cosgrove.” Eventually, Miranda could no longer contain himself when Trump mentioned that the Hamilton star had secretly donated a million dollars to his campaign.

As I stand here, on the brink of turning 30, I find myself struggling to grow even a scruffy mustache or goatee. Yet, despite four consecutive award nominations that ended in losses, I remain hopeful and eager for the speech I’ve always been denied. However, when the moment arrived, it was none other than the talented Kenan Thompson who took the prize, leaving me with a mixture of frustration and admiration.

Nevertheless, I must express my gratitude to Saturday Night Live for giving me the opportunity to perform on their stage tonight. They either showed great kindness in allowing me this experience or perhaps they’re masterminds pulling off an elaborate prank. Perhaps it was a little of both? Either way, I am grateful for this chance and look forward to seeing what the future holds.

Best sketch of the night: This medical visit has been brought to you by Stamps.com

In a show brimming with creative sketches, “Medcast” truly shone for both its innovative concept and flawless delivery. The plot revolves around a unique clinic setup: instead of traditional appointments, male patients aged 20 to 45 engage in relaxed podcast-style discussions about their health history. Here, they discuss topics like their bowel movements and number of sexual partners while having their blood pressure checked – all while chatting with their podcast-hosting friends as if they were just hanging out. The show’s details, such as the eye-catching neon lighting, perfectly encapsulated the intended atmosphere.

Also good: When coffee shop chalkboard jokes go too far

In this sketch, it was likely the one where Chalamet played an aspiring comedian attending barista training that turned into a venue for latte puns on the chalkboard, that gave him the most freedom to shine. He performed a series of incredibly dumb and offensive stand-up routines, which eventually led the coffee shop management to allow him to take over. Thompson then joined as a guest comic, adding more humor with his so-bad-it’s-funny joke spree.

‘Weekend Update’ winner: Tariffs mean a hair-extension crisis

In an “Update” segment, Andrew Dismukes humorously presented his father as a caring puppet, while Ego Nwodim played Giselle, a worried businesswoman. She advised Black women to stock up on hair and extensions before tariffs take effect, stating, “Buy all the hair and extensions you need before those tariffs kick in.” She suggested going natural wasn’t an option for her because she believed her head was lumpy. Without purchased hair, she felt she resembled Michael Che. Giselle warned that they were about to face a predicament, a situation reminiscent of a bald-headed pickle.
