As awards season heats up, Timothée Chalamet is widely expected to be nominated for his performance in Marty Supreme. However, many fans were surprised to learn about his long family history in Hollywood.
I’ve been a huge fan of Timothée Chalamet for years, and it’s amazing how quickly he’s become one of the biggest stars around with films like Call Me By Your Name and Dune. But lately, a lot of the conversation around him hasn’t been about his talent – it’s been about whether his success is due to his family connections, which honestly feels a little unfair given how brilliant he is.
I’ve always noticed how many successful actors come from families already in the business – Matthew McConaughey’s son is already modeling, and Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke’s daughter is getting big acting roles. It really makes you wonder if Timothée Chalamet’s famous family connections played a part in his incredibly fast rise to stardom. It’s hard not to think it might have opened some doors for him.
A popular tweet captured the feeling many had: Timothée Chalamet is benefiting from connections in Hollywood. While he’s often labeled a ‘nepo baby,’ many aren’t aware his uncle works in the industry and helped launch his career.
That’s Rodman Flender, a well-known actor and director who’s worked on shows like The Office and Ugly Betty, as well as the movie Leprechaun 2. He’s also been a close friend of Conan O’Brien for many years.
Reddit users noticed Timothée Chalamet’s mother, Nicole Flender, who is Dennis Rodman’s sister, also comes from a performing arts background – she used to be a Broadway actress and dancer.
Someone commented that this person is privileged and only got their position through family wealth and connections.
He wouldn’t have reached his current position if he’d started out like many people do – juggling multiple jobs while trying to make his dreams a reality.
One Reddit user pointed out that his mother was a Broadway dancer, and getting a role on Broadway usually requires being a member of the Actor’s Equity Association.
Observant fans even noticed the resemblance between Chalamet’s mom and uncle. ‘He and his sister look so much alike wow (Timmy’s mom Nicole),’ one wrote.
Dennis Rodman is famous for being a longtime friend of Conan O’Brien, and he even directed the revealing 2011 documentary about him, ‘Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop’.
Before attending Harvard University, he developed his acting talent at New York’s High School of Performing Arts and the Webber Douglas Academy in London.
Nicole is a successful New York City real estate agent with Corcoran, and she’s also the mother of two accomplished actors, including Pauline, who starred in The Sex Lives of College Girls.
Curbed reports that she’s been a real estate agent for almost ten years. She got her start after her husband, Marc Chalamet – who works at the U.N. after being a journalist – found affordable classes at the New York Real Estate Institute.
Before real estate, Flender was a dance teacher in New York City public schools.
Her children, Timothée and Pauline, were both pursuing acting careers but hadn’t yet found fame. Timothée was preparing to audition for the film Call Me by Your Name, while Pauline was studying acting in Paris.
Flender’s ties to entertainment run even deeper.
Her father, Harold, was a funny writer who both performed comedy and wrote novels – one of his books, Paris Blues, was even made into a movie with Sidney Poitier. Her mother, Enid, was a professional dancer on Broadway.
During the 1970s, the family relocated to Manhattan Plaza, an affordable housing complex designed for people in the performing arts. They ended up living near a young Larry David.
Despite her own impressive career, Flender has been proudly supportive of her children.
Timothée’s SAG Award win for his role in A Complete Unknown was especially meaningful to her, as she’s supported him since the beginning of his journey, she told Entertainment Tonight.
‘From those first commercials he did and Law & Order at 11 years old. I’m so happy. I’m so proud.’
Her résumé is nothing short of remarkable.
She began her performing career young, dancing at Lincoln Center with the New York City Ballet and appearing in several Broadway shows. Today, she advocates for over 50,000 stage actors as an officer of the Actors’ Equity Association.
She also votes for the Tony Awards and authored Cool Careers for People Who Love Movement.
Timothée Chalamet is receiving a lot of awards attention, and with more being revealed about his family’s history in Hollywood, it’s clear he comes from a well-connected background. While he’s often labeled a ‘nepo baby,’ his success is clearly also due to his considerable talent.
