Timothée Chalamet dubbed disrespectful by The View’s Whoopi Goldberg after saying ‘no one cares about’ opera

Timothée Chalamet is facing criticism from other performers after he suggested that ballet and opera aren’t widely appreciated.

During a recent event at the University of Texas at Austin, the 30-year-old actor surprised some people when he admitted to Matthew McConaughey that he had mixed feelings about encouraging audiences to go to movie theaters.

The Oscar-nominated actor, Marty Supreme, described ballet and opera as something people are determined to preserve, even if it feels like public interest has waned.

During a discussion on ABC’s chat show, Sarah Haines pointed out that the actor comes from a family with a strong dance background – his grandmother, mother, and sister all used to dance with the New York City Ballet.

In addition to her work on television, Sunny Hostin has a dance background, having trained with the Dance Theatre of Harlem.

Hostin said the actor left her ‘offended’ and ‘disappointed’ with his flippant remarks on the arts.

‘I didn’t realize that he was that vapid and that shallow,’ Hostin said.

Goldberg pointed out that Chalamet comes from a family of dancers, and criticized him for dismissing someone else’s artistic work, saying it was particularly insensitive given his background.

It’s upsetting to witness, and you likely didn’t understand the situation until it became clear you were facing a problem.

Goldberg explained that Chalamet made things worse by jokingly saying he would have only lost 14 cents from the conversation.

She warned him that angering people could have serious consequences, far beyond a small issue like fourteen cents, and advised him to be cautious in his actions.

Goldberg described the celebrated actor as ‘like a son,’ and quickly added ‘no disrespect’ – a phrase he also used after speaking at the town hall meeting.

Goldberg told Chalamet he didn’t need to apologize, as it came off as inauthentic.

She pointed out that apologizing after being insulting doesn’t make things better, and actually makes it worse. Trying to soften an insult with a disclaimer like ‘no disrespect’ doesn’t work – it is disrespectful.

Sheryl Underwood, appearing as a guest on the panel, seemed to sympathize with Timothée Chalamet as he faced criticism for his comments.

Underwood believes the person felt justified in speaking out, especially after recently making a well-received film about ping-pong.

He’s attractive and youthful, but I suspect if he were performing like the legendary Rudolf Nureyev, he’d have a greater appreciation for ballet.

Underwood said Chalamet’s youth might have been a factor in the ill-received comments.

It really struck me when she said that so many of us young people need to think before we speak – it’s not enough to just react. What I took away from it was a reminder that our words genuinely impact others our age. And honestly, I believe he’s capable of learning that lesson and making a change.

Michael B. Jordan is currently favored to win the Best Actor Oscar, according to Bovada. Timothée Chalamet is the slight underdog, meaning he has lower odds of winning.

Leonardo DiCaprio, known for his role in ‘One Battle After Another,’ Wagner Moura from ‘The Secret Agent,’ and Ethan Hawke of ‘Blue Moon’ are also in the running for the award.

Timothée Chalamet received his first Best Actor nomination in 2017 for his performance in Call Me By Your Name. He was nominated again for Best Actor in 2024 for playing Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown.
