Timestalker is the most unique British movie of the year

As a cinephile who has been fortunate enough to witness Alice Lowe’s meteoric rise in the world of British cinema, I can confidently say that her latest offering, “Timestalker,” is nothing short of extraordinary. Seven years may seem like an eternity, but for those of us who have been eagerly anticipating Lowe’s next move, it has felt like a lifetime well spent.

Seven years past, I found myself engrossed in the chilling debut film of Alice Lowe, titled “Prevenge.” During her pregnancy, she directed this movie, creating an eerie narrative around a widow-to-be who believed her unborn child was driving her to commit murders.

The show was just as remarkable as we anticipated, living up to its intriguing premise (you can catch it on Amazon Prime Video if you haven’t watched it yet). It left us eagerly anticipating what would come next from Lowe. Fortunately, the wait was worthwhile as Timestalker did not disappoint.

The innovative and uniquely crafted blend of history, science fiction, romance, and comedy – debuted at the Edinburgh International Film Festival for its UK premiere – serves as another testament to Lowe’s exceptional storytelling prowess, further cementing her reputation as one of the United Kingdom’s most promising filmmakers.

In the realm of gaming, I find myself transported back to 1688, nestled amidst the rugged landscapes of Western Scotland. Here, I encounter a captivating character named Agnes Lowe, who finds herself enthralled by the questionable figure of preacher Alex (Aneurin Barnard). This intriguing tale unfolds as Alex stands on the precipice of his execution.

In this gaming world, I wouldn’t want to ruin the surprise of the upcoming scene that packs a punch, but let me just say, there are more than one Agnes we get to know in this flick. As the movie hops across timelines from 1790s rural England to 1980s Manhattan, I can’t help but be pulled toward the Alex of each era that Agnes encounters.

However, are they fated to remain a duo throughout eternity, or could some other factor be involved? Also, what is the reason behind Agnes repeatedly encountering multiple iterations of her friend Meg (Tanya Reynolds) and George (Nick Frost), regardless of the time period she’s in?

Experiencing the thrill of Timestalker lies in enjoying the rollercoaster journey that Lowe has designed, and we wouldn’t want to spoil that excitement for you either.

If you’ve read Lowe’s past writings before, the dark humor in Timestalker may not catch you off guard. However, if this is your first time encountering his work, brace yourself. Although it could be categorized as a romantic and comedic piece, it strays far from typical fluffy rom-coms. Instead, it offers an engaging mix of dry wit, absurdly funny (and distinctively British) moments, and even some gruesomely dark humor to boot.

In Timestalker, the romantic narrative deviates from typical norms as Alex could be the recipient of Agnes’ affections, but he is not your average Mr. Darcy; instead, he exhibits less than admirable behavior.

But don’t let that fool you into thinking this is just a comedy. Lowe might have fun at the expense of Agnes and her particular choice of man, but she brings genuine pathos to Agnes, both in performance and writing. The final act of Timestalker has a familiar message, yet it’s beautifully handled.

As a fan, I must say that the craftsmanship and costume design in this film is simply outstanding. It masterfully transports us through various eras, all while working within the confines of a British indie budget. From a technical standpoint, it’s a significant leap forward for Lowe compared to his previous work on “Prevenge.” Given the more expansive scope of “Timestalker,” this level of quality is truly fitting.

The movie’s success is largely due to Lowe, who shines whether in front or behind the camera. Moreover, she has a keen eye for casting. Barnard delights in playing various incarnations of Alex, especially enjoying his role as an ’80s pop star. Nick Frost, Tanya Reynolds, and Jacob Anderson all deliver solid performances throughout the cast.

“Timestalker stands out as an exceptional British film from this year, and even ranks high among the top British films in 2024 so far. Here’s hoping that Alice Lowe won’t keep us waiting another seven years before she makes her next movie.”
